Buick Rainier 2005-2007 5.3L V8 AFM/DFM Disabler
Product function
Vehicle fitment: 2005–2007 Buick Rainier (5.3L V8). Every row in the fitment table is listed as a 100% fitment match. AFM engine codes that match these years and sizes: LH6.
In short: GM's Active Fuel Management shuts down cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8 at light load. The module keeps the engine computer from selecting that mode. You get the same response at light throttle as under load.
What to expect: No power gain: full-throttle operation already uses every cylinder. It is not a repair for lifter noise, misfires or oil consumption.
Engine code: Read the engine code from the 8th VIN digit or the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label. Non-AFM engines such as the LH9, LY6, L96, L92 and L9H are not candidates. DFM engines (2019-on L84, L87) are a separate system.
How it connects: It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. Nothing is cut and the engine software is not rewritten. Unplug it for inspections or diagnostics, then refit it.
Maintenance: AFM lifters are switched by oil pressure. Follow GM's oil specification and change schedule. Start with a healthy engine: clear up misfire or lifter codes first.
Shipping, returns, warranty: No-cost standard shipping in the contiguous United States (handling 1–2 business days, transit 3–4). Pre-approved returns are accepted for 45 days, with a 20% restocking fee and customer-paid return shipping. The part has a 3-year limited warranty. Fitment questions go to support@automotivebypass.com (Mon–Fri, 9–5 PST); include the VIN.

Description
For the 2005–2007 Buick Rainier: an OBD-II plug-in module that stops the engine from switching into cylinder-deactivation mode. The engine stays on all cylinders during cruising and light throttle, where AFM would normally shut half of them down. No tools, no wiring and no reflash of the engine computer. Unplug it and AFM works again as it did from the factory.
Covered applications
Listed applications, each a 100% fitment match:
- 2005–2007 Buick Rainier: 5.3L V8
GM engine codes with AFM that line up with these years and displacements:
- LH6 (5.3L, 2005–2009, VIN 8th digit "M")
An engine code that is not listed here does not automatically rule the vehicle out, but send us the VIN first so we can check.
What AFM does on these engines
GM's Active Fuel Management turns a V8 into a V4 at light load by deactivating cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4. Solenoids route oil pressure to the lifters on those cylinders, which collapse and stop opening the valves. Fuel to those cylinders is cut at the same time. Press the throttle harder and the system brings all eight back.
The first drive
Expect steadier behavior at part throttle and no change at wide-open throttle. Towing and hill climbing were already mostly done on all cylinders, so the biggest change is during relaxed cruising. Average fuel economy may drop slightly depending on how much of your driving is light-load highway time.
Maintenance still matters
AFM lifters and the solenoids that control them run on engine oil pressure. Keeping the oil at the right level, using the grade GM specifies on the oil filler cap or in the owner's manual, and changing it on schedule matters whether or not AFM is active. The module changes when cylinders deactivate; it does not change the oiling system.
Module, tune or delete kit
There are three common ways to stop cylinder deactivation on GM engines: a plug-in module like this one, a custom tune that turns AFM off in the engine computer, or a mechanical delete that replaces the AFM lifters and related hardware and then needs a tune to match. The module is the only one of the three that needs no tools and no engine-computer changes, and it is the only one you can undo by unplugging it. It does not replace failed lifters; if hardware is already damaged, the repair comes first.
Practical notes
The module uses the OBD-II port, so it has to come out whenever a technician or an inspection station needs the port. Plugging it back in restores the all-cylinder mode. Route it so the driver cannot kick it loose.
Why people turn AFM off
Owners usually disable AFM for one of three reasons: they notice the change between modes as a vibration or exhaust drone, they want a consistent throttle response while towing or climbing grades, or they want to limit how often the deactivation lifters switch. Keeping the engine on all cylinders addresses all three. The tradeoff is that you give up whatever fuel saving AFM was providing in light cruising.
Before installing
Scan for stored codes before you plug it in. Misfire codes on the deactivation cylinders, an AFM solenoid circuit code, or a lifter noise are signs of an existing problem that should be repaired first. The module is meant for a healthy engine where you simply do not want cylinder deactivation.
Confirm your engine
- Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2005–2007 Buick Rainier).
- The quickest checks are the 8th digit of your VIN, which identifies the engine, and the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label (glovebox or trunk on most pre-2018 GM models, QR code on the driver-door pillar label from 2018).
- The engine runs cleanly with no stored misfire or AFM codes.
- If the vehicle has an engine swap, an aftermarket tune or a replacement engine computer, contact support first.
- Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.
Shipping and support
Standard shipping inside the lower 48 states costs nothing; allow 1–2 business days of handling plus 3–4 in transit. Returns need approval first and must be requested within 45 days. Approved returns are subject to a 20% restocking fee, with return shipping paid by the customer. A 3-year limited warranty applies. Email support@automotivebypass.com (Mon–Fri, 9–5 PST) with your VIN if you want a fitment check.
Questions & Answers
Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?
No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.
How do I tell which engine my Buick Rainier has?
Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).
Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the Buick Rainier?
Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.
Which Buick Rainier years and engines does it fit?
The fitment table lists Buick Rainier 2005–2007 with 5.3L V8. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.
Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?
No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.
Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?
Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.
How much fuel does AFM save?
EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.
Can I go back to factory AFM?
Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.
Is a tune or ECU reflash required?
No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.
Will it add horsepower?
No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.
Does it change anything when towing?
Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.
Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?
Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.
