Cadillac Escalade 2010-2017 6.2L V8 AFM/DFM Disabler
Product function
Covered vehicles: Listed for the 2010–2017 Cadillac Escalade (6.2L V8). All fitment rows are marked 100% fitment match. AFM engine codes that match these years and sizes: L94, L86.
Before you order: Check VIN digit 8 or the RPO codes (glovebox sticker before 2018, door-pillar QR code from 2018). If the code is a non-AFM engine like the LH9, L96 or L9H, skip this listing.
Reversibility: Unplug the module and factory AFM works again. No parts were changed, so nothing needs reversing.
Connection: It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. No tools and no tune are needed. Remove it whenever a scan tool or emissions tester needs the port.
What it does not change: Peak output is unchanged. It is not a repair for lifter noise, misfires or oil consumption.
What it does: Cylinder deactivation on these engines switches off cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8 when load is light. Plugged in, it keeps the engine in full-cylinder operation. The shudder, drone or hesitation some owners feel at each switch goes away.
Ordering terms: No-cost standard shipping in the contiguous United States (handling 1–2 business days, transit 3–4). Pre-approved returns are accepted for 45 days, with a 20% restocking fee and customer-paid return shipping. The part has a 3-year limited warranty. Send the VIN to support@automotivebypass.com if any row is unclear. Support answers weekdays, 9–5 Pacific.

Description
For the 2010–2017 Cadillac Escalade: an OBD-II plug-in module that stops the engine from switching into cylinder-deactivation mode. The engine stays on all cylinders during cruising and light throttle, where AFM would normally shut half of them down. Installation is plugging it in. Nothing is spliced, flashed or removed from the engine, and the factory system resumes as soon as the module is unplugged.
Covered applications
Each row below is listed as a 100% fitment match:
- 2010–2017 Cadillac Escalade: 6.2L V8
For reference, these are the AFM-equipped GM engine codes that match the years and displacements above:
- L94 (6.2L, 2010–2014, VIN 8th digit "F")
- L86 (6.2L, 2014–2018, VIN 8th digit "J")
In the same trucks and SUVs, GM also built V8s without AFM, for example the 5.3L LH9 (2010–2012 trucks, VIN code P), the 6.0L LY6 and L96 and the 6.2L L9H. Those engines never deactivate cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage on them. If your RPO list shows one of those codes, contact us before ordering.
An engine code that is not listed here does not automatically rule the vehicle out, but send us the VIN first so we can check.
How Active Fuel Management operates
On AFM V8 engines, the computer shuts off fuel and holds the valves closed on cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 when the load is light, so the engine runs as a V4. It does this through special collapsible lifters on those cylinders, fed by oil-pressure solenoids. When you ask for more power, the lifters lock again and all eight cylinders fire. GM describes this behavior in its service bulletin on AFM and DFM operation.
GM replaced AFM with Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) on the 5.3L L84 and 6.2L L87 starting with the 2019 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500. The engines covered here use the earlier AFM design.
Engine care
Disabling cylinder deactivation does not replace normal maintenance. Use the oil grade and change interval GM lists for your engine, watch the oil level between changes, and repair leaks promptly. The valvetrain on these engines depends on clean oil at proper pressure in every mode.
Before installing
Scan for stored codes before you plug it in. Misfire codes on the deactivation cylinders, an AFM solenoid circuit code, or a lifter noise are signs of an existing problem that should be repaired first. The module is meant for a healthy engine where you simply do not want cylinder deactivation.
Why people turn AFM off
The usual complaints are a drone or shudder in reduced-cylinder mode, a slight hesitation when the engine switches back, and a general wish to keep the valvetrain doing the same thing all the time. With the module installed, the engine stays in full-cylinder mode, so those transitions stop. Expect light-load fuel economy to be closer to an engine without AFM.
How this differs from an AFM delete kit
Owners who want AFM gone for good sometimes go the mechanical route: non-AFM lifters, a matching camshaft and a retune. That is a large job and it is permanent. A tuner can also disable AFM in the engine computer. The plug-in module sits at the other end of the scale: no parts replaced, no software rewritten, and back to factory with one pull. It is meant for engines that run well and simply should not switch modes.
Using it day to day
The module uses the OBD-II port, so it has to come out whenever a technician or an inspection station needs the port. Plugging it back in restores the all-cylinder mode. Route it so the driver cannot kick it loose.
After installation
Drive at a steady cruise on a light throttle, where AFM used to switch modes. The engine should now stay on all cylinders, so the subtle shudder, drone or hesitation that came with each change should be gone. If your dash shows instant fuel economy, expect the light-cruise numbers to read a little lower than before, since that is exactly where cylinder deactivation saved fuel.
How to confirm your engine code
- Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2010–2017 Cadillac Escalade).
- Find your engine code. On GM vehicles before the 2018 model year, the Service Parts Identification label (usually inside the glovebox on these trucks and SUVs) lists the three-character RPO codes, and the engine code starts with L. From 2018, GM moved that data into a QR code on the certification label on the driver-side door pillar. The 8th character of the VIN also identifies the engine.
- The engine runs cleanly with no stored misfire or AFM codes.
- If the vehicle has an engine swap, an aftermarket tune or a replacement engine computer, contact support first.
- Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Questions & Answers
Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the Cadillac Escalade?
Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.
Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?
Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.
Can I go back to factory AFM?
Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.
Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?
No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.
Which Cadillac Escalade years and engines does it fit?
The fitment table lists Cadillac Escalade 2010–2017 with 6.2L V8. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.
Will it add horsepower?
No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.
How do I tell which engine my Cadillac Escalade has?
Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).
Is a tune or ECU reflash required?
No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.
Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?
No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.
How much fuel does AFM save?
EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.
Does it change anything when towing?
Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.
Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?
Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.
