Product function

Vehicle fitment: The 2010–2013 Cadillac Escalade EXT (6.2L V8). Each listed year carries a 100% fitment match. AFM engine codes that match these years and sizes: L94.

Before you order: Read the engine code from the 8th VIN digit or the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label. If the code is a non-AFM engine like the LH9, L96 or L9H, skip this listing.

Connection: Installation is plugging it into the OBD-II diagnostic port. No wiring, splicing or reflash is involved. Unplug it for inspections or diagnostics, then refit it.

Reversibility: Removing it restores factory cylinder deactivation.

Keep in mind: Peak output is unchanged. An engine that already has a valvetrain fault still needs repair.

Engine care: Cylinder deactivation on these engines is hydraulic. Correct oil grade, level and change intervals still matter.

The job it does: At steady cruise, AFM drops cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8. Plugged in, it keeps the engine in full-cylinder operation. Mode changes, and the vibration that can come with them, stop.

Shipping, returns, warranty: Free shipping to the contiguous US, dispatched in 1–2 business days with about 3–4 days in transit. Returns within 45 days with pre-approval (20% restocking fee, buyer pays return postage). Covered by a 3-year limited warranty. Send the VIN to support@automotivebypass.com if any row is unclear. Support answers weekdays, 9–5 Pacific.

Description

This AFM/DFM disabler plugs into the OBD-II port of the 2010–2013 Cadillac Escalade EXT. Its job is to keep the engine running on all cylinders instead of dropping into the reduced-cylinder mode that GM's Active Fuel Management uses at light load. There is no tune involved and nothing inside the engine is changed. Pull it out of the port and the factory strategy returns.

Vehicles, years and engines

The fitment table for this part (all rows marked 100% fitment match):

  • 2010–2013 Cadillac Escalade EXT: 6.2L V8

AFM-equipped engine codes that GM used in these years and sizes:

  • L94 (6.2L, 2010–2014, VIN 8th digit "F")

In the same trucks and SUVs, GM also built V8s without AFM, for example the 5.3L LH9 (2010–2012 trucks, VIN code P), the 6.0L LY6 and L96 and the 6.2L L9H. Those engines never deactivate cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage on them. Check your code against both lists before you buy.

An engine code that is not listed here does not automatically rule the vehicle out, but send us the VIN first so we can check.

How Active Fuel Management operates

When cruising at steady speed, an AFM V8 drops to four cylinders. Cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 have two-stage lifters that the engine computer can switch with oil pressure; once switched, those valves stay shut and the injectors stop firing. The switch back to eight cylinders happens whenever more torque is needed.

Before installing

Scan for stored codes before you plug it in. Misfire codes on the deactivation cylinders, an AFM solenoid circuit code, or a lifter noise are signs of an existing problem that should be repaired first. The module is meant for a healthy engine where you simply do not want cylinder deactivation.

Other ways owners disable AFM

Owners who want AFM gone for good sometimes go the mechanical route: non-AFM lifters, a matching camshaft and a retune. That is a large job and it is permanent. A tuner can also disable AFM in the engine computer. The plug-in module sits at the other end of the scale: no parts replaced, no software rewritten, and back to factory with one pull. It is meant for engines that run well and simply should not switch modes.

Oil and maintenance

AFM lifters and the solenoids that control them run on engine oil pressure. Keeping the oil at the right level, using the grade GM specifies on the oil filler cap or in the owner's manual, and changing it on schedule matters whether or not AFM is active. The module changes when cylinders deactivate; it does not change the oiling system.

Scan tools and inspections

Because it occupies the OBD-II port, unplug the module before connecting a scan tool, an insurance logger or an emissions-test probe, then plug it back in afterwards. Make sure it sits clear of your left knee and the pedals, and that the housing is fully seated in the port.

What owners are after

Owners usually disable AFM for one of three reasons: they notice the change between modes as a vibration or exhaust drone, they want a consistent throttle response while towing or climbing grades, or they want to limit how often the deactivation lifters switch. Keeping the engine on all cylinders addresses all three. The tradeoff is that you give up whatever fuel saving AFM was providing in light cruising.

What changes when you drive

Drive at a steady cruise on a light throttle, where AFM used to switch modes. The engine should now stay on all cylinders, so the subtle shudder, drone or hesitation that came with each change should be gone. If your dash shows instant fuel economy, expect the light-cruise numbers to read a little lower than before, since that is exactly where cylinder deactivation saved fuel.

Fitment check

  • Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2010–2013 Cadillac Escalade EXT).
  • Find your engine code. On GM vehicles before the 2018 model year, the Service Parts Identification label (usually inside the glovebox on these trucks and SUVs) lists the three-character RPO codes, and the engine code starts with L. From 2018, GM moved that data into a QR code on the certification label on the driver-side door pillar. The 8th character of the VIN also identifies the engine.
  • No check-engine light is on, and oil level and pressure are normal.
  • If the vehicle has an engine swap, an aftermarket tune or a replacement engine computer, contact support first.
  • Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Shipping and support

Free standard shipping covers the contiguous US, with dispatch in 1–2 business days and 3–4 days on the road after that. You have 45 days to request a return (pre-approval required, 20% restocking fee, buyer-paid return shipping). The module is backed by a 3-year limited warranty. Questions & Answers
Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the Cadillac Escalade EXT?

Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.

Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?

No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.

Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?

Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.

Which Cadillac Escalade EXT years and engines does it fit?

The fitment table lists Cadillac Escalade EXT 2010–2013 with 6.2L V8. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.

Is a tune or ECU reflash required?

No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.

Does it change anything when towing?

Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.

Can I go back to factory AFM?

Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.

How do I tell which engine my Cadillac Escalade EXT has?

Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).

Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?

Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.

How much fuel does AFM save?

EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.

Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?

No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.

Will it add horsepower?

No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.
