Product function

Fits: 2005–2007 Cadillac STS (3.6L V6). All fitment rows are marked 100% fitment match. Confirm from the RPO label or VIN that your engine is equipped with cylinder deactivation.

Keep in mind: Peak output is unchanged. An engine that already has a valvetrain fault still needs repair.

What it does: On these engines AFM idles cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8 during light cruising. This module stops the switch into reduced-cylinder mode.

Installation: The module goes into the OBD-II port. No tools and no tune are needed. Take it out when a shop needs the port.

Engine check: Check VIN digit 8 or the RPO codes (glovebox sticker before 2018, door-pillar QR code from 2018). Engines built without AFM (LH9, LY6, L96, L92, L9H) have nothing for it to manage. DFM engines (2019-on L84, L87) are a separate system.

If you change your mind: Removing it restores factory cylinder deactivation. No parts were changed, so nothing needs reversing.

Oil and care: The AFM hardware runs on engine oil pressure. Follow GM's oil specification and change schedule. Scan for codes and fix existing faults before fitting the module.

Order details: Ships free within the lower 48 states: 1–2 business days to dispatch, 3–4 more on the road. A 45-day return window applies once a return is approved, less a 20% restocking fee and return shipping. 3-year limited warranty. Not sure? Email support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN, Monday to Friday 9–5 PST.

Description

A plug-in cylinder-deactivation disabler for the 2005–2007 Cadillac STS. It goes into the OBD-II diagnostic port and keeps the factory Active Fuel Management system from engaging, so the engine runs on every cylinder all the time. No tools, no wiring and no reflash of the engine computer. Unplug it and AFM works again as it did from the factory.

Fitment by year and engine

Each row below is listed as a 100% fitment match:

  • 2005–2007 Cadillac STS: 3.6L V6

Confirm that your exact engine is the one in the table and that it uses cylinder deactivation. The RPO label and the VIN engine digit are the reliable ways to check, and support can confirm from a VIN.

What AFM does on these engines

GM's cylinder deactivation saves fuel by running the engine on fewer cylinders during light-load cruising. The switch is controlled by the engine computer. The module talks to the vehicle through the OBD-II port and keeps that reduced-cylinder mode from being selected, so all cylinders stay active.

Reasons to keep all cylinders running

The usual complaints are a drone or shudder in reduced-cylinder mode, a slight hesitation when the engine switches back, and a general wish to keep the valvetrain doing the same thing all the time. With the module installed, the engine stays in full-cylinder mode, so those transitions stop. Expect light-load fuel economy to be closer to an engine without AFM.

Engine care

Disabling cylinder deactivation does not replace normal maintenance. Use the oil grade and change interval GM lists for your engine, watch the oil level between changes, and repair leaks promptly. The valvetrain on these engines depends on clean oil at proper pressure in every mode.

Scan tools and inspections

The module uses the OBD-II port, so it has to come out whenever a technician or an inspection station needs the port. Plugging it back in restores the all-cylinder mode. Route it so the driver cannot kick it loose.

Before installing

This module prevents mode switching. It does not repair anything. If the engine already has a ticking lifter, misfire codes, low oil pressure or high oil consumption, have it diagnosed before relying on the module. Those symptoms need a mechanical repair, and keeping AFM off will not reverse damage that has already happened.

Other ways owners disable AFM

There are three common ways to stop cylinder deactivation on GM engines: a plug-in module like this one, a custom tune that turns AFM off in the engine computer, or a mechanical delete that replaces the AFM lifters and related hardware and then needs a tune to match. The module is the only one of the three that needs no tools and no engine-computer changes, and it is the only one you can undo by unplugging it. It does not replace failed lifters; if hardware is already damaged, the repair comes first.

What to expect on the road

The difference shows up in light-load driving: steady highway speeds, gentle acceleration and coasting down small grades. Those are the moments when AFM used to drop cylinders. With the module in, engine behavior there should feel the same as under heavier throttle. Full-throttle performance does not change, because AFM was never active at full throttle anyway.

Fitment check

  • Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2005–2007 Cadillac STS).
  • Look up the engine RPO code. Older GM vehicles print it on the Service Parts Identification sticker, often in the glovebox; 2018 and newer GM models carry it in a QR code on the driver-side B-pillar label. You can also read the 8th digit of the VIN, which is the engine code.
  • No check-engine light is on, and oil level and pressure are normal.
  • If the vehicle has an engine swap, an aftermarket tune or a replacement engine computer, contact support first.
  • Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Questions & Answers
Which Cadillac STS years and engines does it fit?

The fitment table lists Cadillac STS 2005–2007 with 3.6L V6. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.

Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?

No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.

Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?

Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.

Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the Cadillac STS?

Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.

How do I tell which engine my Cadillac STS has?

Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).

Does it change anything when towing?

Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.

Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?

Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.

How much fuel does AFM save?

EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.

Is a tune or ECU reflash required?

No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.

Can I go back to factory AFM?

Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.

Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?

No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.

Will it add horsepower?

No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.
