Cadillac XT5 2016-2019 3.6L V6 AFM/DFM Disabler
Product function
Vehicle fitment: 2016–2019 Cadillac XT5 (3.6L V6). All fitment rows are marked 100% fitment match. Confirm from the RPO label or VIN that your engine is equipped with cylinder deactivation.
Confirm first: Check VIN digit 8 or the RPO codes (glovebox sticker before 2018, door-pillar QR code from 2018). Non-AFM engines such as the LH9, LY6, L96, L92 and L9H are not candidates.
Maintenance: The AFM hardware runs on engine oil pressure. Follow GM's oil specification and change schedule.
Fitting: It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. No tools and no tune are needed. Unplug it for inspections or diagnostics, then refit it.
Removal: Unplug the module and factory AFM works again. No parts were changed, so nothing needs reversing.
Limits: It does not add horsepower; AFM is never active at full throttle. An engine that already has a valvetrain fault still needs repair. Cruise economy can drop a little because AFM's savings come from light-load driving.
What it does: At steady cruise, AFM drops cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8. This module stops the switch into reduced-cylinder mode.
Shipping and warranty: Free shipping to the contiguous US, dispatched in 1–2 business days with about 3–4 days in transit. Returns within 45 days with pre-approval (20% restocking fee, buyer pays return postage). Covered by a 3-year limited warranty. Not sure? Email support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN, Monday to Friday 9–5 PST.

Description
For the 2016–2019 Cadillac XT5: an OBD-II plug-in module that stops the engine from switching into cylinder-deactivation mode. The engine stays on all cylinders during cruising and light throttle, where AFM would normally shut half of them down. It does not rewrite engine software, and removal takes seconds: unplug the module and the vehicle is back to stock behavior.
Vehicles, years and engines
The fitment table for this part (all rows marked 100% fitment match):
- 2016–2019 Cadillac XT5: 3.6L V6
GM used several V6 families in these years. Before ordering, confirm from your RPO label or VIN that your engine is the one listed and that it is equipped with cylinder deactivation; if in doubt, send the VIN to support.
How Active Fuel Management operates
GM's cylinder deactivation saves fuel by running the engine on fewer cylinders during light-load cruising. The switch is controlled by the engine computer. The module talks to the vehicle through the OBD-II port and keeps that reduced-cylinder mode from being selected, so all cylinders stay active.
Oil and maintenance
AFM lifters and the solenoids that control them run on engine oil pressure. Keeping the oil at the right level, using the grade GM specifies on the oil filler cap or in the owner's manual, and changing it on schedule matters whether or not AFM is active. The module changes when cylinders deactivate; it does not change the oiling system.
Before installing
This module prevents mode switching. It does not repair anything. If the engine already has a ticking lifter, misfire codes, low oil pressure or high oil consumption, have it diagnosed before relying on the module. Those symptoms need a mechanical repair, and keeping AFM off will not reverse damage that has already happened.
After installation
The difference shows up in light-load driving: steady highway speeds, gentle acceleration and coasting down small grades. Those are the moments when AFM used to drop cylinders. With the module in, engine behavior there should feel the same as under heavier throttle. Full-throttle performance does not change, because AFM was never active at full throttle anyway.
Using it day to day
Because it occupies the OBD-II port, unplug the module before connecting a scan tool, an insurance logger or an emissions-test probe, then plug it back in afterwards. Make sure it sits clear of your left knee and the pedals, and that the housing is fully seated in the port.
Plug-in module vs. a mechanical AFM delete
A mechanical AFM delete swaps the deactivating lifters (and often the camshaft and lifter oil manifold) for non-AFM parts and requires a tune afterwards. A tune alone can switch AFM off in software. This module works through the OBD-II port instead, so the engine hardware and its calibration stay stock. That makes it the easiest option to reverse, and the right one only when the engine is mechanically healthy.
Reasons to keep all cylinders running
Many drivers would rather have predictable response than the small economy gain from running on fewer cylinders, especially when towing, hauling or driving in hills. Keeping AFM off removes the mode changes entirely. It does not add horsepower, and it is not a fix for an engine that already has lifter or oil-consumption problems.
How to confirm your engine code
- Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2016–2019 Cadillac XT5).
- The quickest checks are the 8th digit of your VIN, which identifies the engine, and the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label (glovebox or trunk on most pre-2018 GM models, QR code on the driver-door pillar label from 2018).
- No check-engine light is on, and oil level and pressure are normal.
- If the vehicle has an engine swap, an aftermarket tune or a replacement engine computer, contact support first.

Questions & Answers
Which Cadillac XT5 years and engines does it fit?
The fitment table lists Cadillac XT5 2016–2019 with 3.6L V6. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.
Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the Cadillac XT5?
Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.
Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?
No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.
Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?
Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.
Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?
No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.
Will it add horsepower?
No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.
Does it change anything when towing?
Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.
Is a tune or ECU reflash required?
No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.
Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?
Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.
Can I go back to factory AFM?
Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.
How do I tell which engine my Cadillac XT5 has?
Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).
How much fuel does AFM save?
EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.
