Product function

Fits: 2015–2018 GMC Canyon (3.6L V6). Every row in the fitment table is listed as a 100% fitment match. Confirm from the RPO label or VIN that your engine is equipped with cylinder deactivation.

Engine code: Read the engine code from the 8th VIN digit or the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label. Engines built without AFM (LH9, LY6, L96, L92, L9H) have nothing for it to manage.

Connection: Installation is plugging it into the OBD-II diagnostic port. No wiring, splicing or reflash is involved. Remove it whenever a scan tool or emissions tester needs the port.

What it does not change: No power gain: full-throttle operation already uses every cylinder. An engine that already has a valvetrain fault still needs repair. Cruise economy can drop a little because AFM's savings come from light-load driving.

The job it does: GM's Active Fuel Management shuts down cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8 at light load. This module stops the switch into reduced-cylinder mode. The shudder, drone or hesitation some owners feel at each switch goes away.

Order details: Free shipping to the contiguous US, dispatched in 1–2 business days with about 3–4 days in transit. Returns within 45 days with pre-approval (20% restocking fee, buyer pays return postage). Covered by a 3-year limited warranty. Not sure? Email support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN, Monday to Friday 9–5 PST.

Description

This AFM/DFM disabler plugs into the OBD-II port of the 2015–2018 GMC Canyon. Its job is to keep the engine running on all cylinders instead of dropping into the reduced-cylinder mode that GM's Active Fuel Management uses at light load. Installation is plugging it in. Nothing is spliced, flashed or removed from the engine, and the factory system resumes as soon as the module is unplugged.

Vehicles, years and engines

The fitment table for this part (all rows marked 100% fitment match):

  • 2015–2018 GMC Canyon: 3.6L V6

Confirm that your exact engine is the one in the table and that it uses cylinder deactivation. The RPO label and the VIN engine digit are the reliable ways to check, and support can confirm from a VIN.

How GM cylinder deactivation works

GM's cylinder deactivation saves fuel by running the engine on fewer cylinders during light-load cruising. The switch is controlled by the engine computer. The module talks to the vehicle through the OBD-II port and keeps that reduced-cylinder mode from being selected, so all cylinders stay active.

Why people turn AFM off

The usual complaints are a drone or shudder in reduced-cylinder mode, a slight hesitation when the engine switches back, and a general wish to keep the valvetrain doing the same thing all the time. With the module installed, the engine stays in full-cylinder mode, so those transitions stop. Expect light-load fuel economy to be closer to an engine without AFM.

Scan tools and inspections

Because it occupies the OBD-II port, unplug the module before connecting a scan tool, an insurance logger or an emissions-test probe, then plug it back in afterwards. Make sure it sits clear of your left knee and the pedals, and that the housing is fully seated in the port.

Diagnose existing problems first

Keep the oil at the correct level and grade before and after installation. AFM lifters and their solenoids are oil-pressure operated, so an engine that is low on oil or running the wrong grade should be sorted out first. The module stops the switching, but it is not a substitute for maintenance or for repairing an engine that already has a fault.

What changes when you drive

Expect steadier behavior at part throttle and no change at wide-open throttle. Towing and hill climbing were already mostly done on all cylinders, so the biggest change is during relaxed cruising. Average fuel economy may drop slightly depending on how much of your driving is light-load highway time.

Plug-in module vs. a mechanical AFM delete

A mechanical AFM delete swaps the deactivating lifters (and often the camshaft and lifter oil manifold) for non-AFM parts and requires a tune afterwards. A tune alone can switch AFM off in software. This module works through the OBD-II port instead, so the engine hardware and its calibration stay stock. That makes it the easiest option to reverse, and the right one only when the engine is mechanically healthy.

Maintenance still matters

Oil level and quality are worth watching on any AFM engine, because the deactivation hardware is hydraulic. Check the dipstick at fuel stops on high-mileage engines, follow GM's specified oil grade, and address oil-pressure warnings immediately. None of that changes with the module installed.

Fitment check

  • Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2015–2018 GMC Canyon).
  • Look up the engine RPO code. Older GM vehicles print it on the Service Parts Identification sticker, often in the glovebox; 2018 and newer GM models carry it in a QR code on the driver-side B-pillar label. You can also read the 8th digit of the VIN, which is the engine code.
  • No check-engine light is on, and oil level and pressure are normal.
  • If the vehicle has an engine swap, an aftermarket tune or a replacement engine computer, contact support first.
  • Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Shipping and support

Standard shipping inside the lower 48 states costs nothing; allow 1–2 business days of handling plus 3–4 in transit. Returns need approval first and must be requested within 45 days. Approved returns are subject to a 20% restocking fee, with return shipping paid by the customer. A 3-year limited warranty applies. Email support@automotivebypass.com (Mon–Fri, 9–5 PST) with your VIN if you want a fitment check.

Questions & Answers
Which GMC Canyon years and engines does it fit?

The fitment table lists GMC Canyon 2015–2018 with 3.6L V6. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.

Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the GMC Canyon?

Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.

Can I go back to factory AFM?

Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.

Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?

No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.

How do I tell which engine my GMC Canyon has?

Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).

Does it change anything when towing?

Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.

How much fuel does AFM save?

EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.

Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?

Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.

Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?

No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.

Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?

Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.

Will it add horsepower?

No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.

Is a tune or ECU reflash required?

No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.
