GMC Denali XL 2007-2017 6.0L/6.2L V8 AFM/DFM Disabler
Product function
Applications: 2007–2017 GMC Denali XL (6.0L V8, 6.2L V8). Every row in the fitment table is listed as a 100% fitment match. AFM engine codes that match these years and sizes: L76, LFA, L94, L86.
Core function: GM's Active Fuel Management shuts down cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8 at light load. Plugged in, it keeps the engine in full-cylinder operation.
Connection: Installation is plugging it into the OBD-II diagnostic port. No tools and no tune are needed. Remove it whenever a scan tool or emissions tester needs the port.
Keep in mind: No power gain: full-throttle operation already uses every cylinder. An engine that already has a valvetrain fault still needs repair.
Still important: The AFM hardware runs on engine oil pressure. Correct oil grade, level and change intervals still matter. Scan for codes and fix existing faults before fitting the module.
Confirm first: Read the engine code from the 8th VIN digit or the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label. If the code is a non-AFM engine like the LH9, L96 or L9H, skip this listing.
Order details: No-cost standard shipping in the contiguous United States (handling 1–2 business days, transit 3–4). Pre-approved returns are accepted for 45 days, with a 20% restocking fee and customer-paid return shipping. The part has a 3-year limited warranty. Send the VIN to support@automotivebypass.com if any row is unclear. Support answers weekdays, 9–5 Pacific.

Description
This AFM/DFM disabler plugs into the OBD-II port of the 2007–2017 GMC Denali XL. Its job is to keep the engine running on all cylinders instead of dropping into the reduced-cylinder mode that GM's Active Fuel Management uses at light load. It does not rewrite engine software, and removal takes seconds: unplug the module and the vehicle is back to stock behavior.
Fitment by year and engine
Each row below is listed as a 100% fitment match:
- 2007–2009 GMC Denali XL: 6.0L V8 / 6.2L V8
- 2010–2017 GMC Denali XL: 6.2L V8
AFM-equipped engine codes that GM used in these years and sizes:
- L76 (6.0L, 2007–2009, VIN 8th digit "Y")
- LFA (6.0L, 2008–2009, VIN 8th digit "5")
- L94 (6.2L, 2010–2014, VIN 8th digit "F")
- L86 (6.2L, 2014–2018, VIN 8th digit "J")
In the same trucks and SUVs, GM also built V8s without AFM, for example the 5.3L LH9 (2010–2012 trucks, VIN code P), the 6.0L LY6 and L96 and the 6.2L L9H. Those engines never deactivate cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage on them. If your RPO list shows one of those codes, contact us before ordering.
An engine code that is not listed here does not automatically rule the vehicle out, but send us the VIN first so we can check.
The factory system in brief
When cruising at steady speed, an AFM V8 drops to four cylinders. Cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 have two-stage lifters that the engine computer can switch with oil pressure; once switched, those valves stay shut and the injectors stop firing. The switch back to eight cylinders happens whenever more torque is needed.
For the 2019 redesign of the Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500, GM introduced Dynamic Fuel Management on the 5.3L L84 and 6.2L L87, which can run on 17 different cylinder patterns. That is a different system from the AFM covered by this listing.
Reasons to keep all cylinders running
The usual complaints are a drone or shudder in reduced-cylinder mode, a slight hesitation when the engine switches back, and a general wish to keep the valvetrain doing the same thing all the time. With the module installed, the engine stays in full-cylinder mode, so those transitions stop. Expect light-load fuel economy to be closer to an engine without AFM.
Oil and maintenance
Disabling cylinder deactivation does not replace normal maintenance. Use the oil grade and change interval GM lists for your engine, watch the oil level between changes, and repair leaks promptly. The valvetrain on these engines depends on clean oil at proper pressure in every mode.
Using it day to day
The module uses the OBD-II port, so it has to come out whenever a technician or an inspection station needs the port. Plugging it back in restores the all-cylinder mode. Route it so the driver cannot kick it loose.
Module, tune or delete kit
A mechanical AFM delete swaps the deactivating lifters (and often the camshaft and lifter oil manifold) for non-AFM parts and requires a tune afterwards. A tune alone can switch AFM off in software. This module works through the OBD-II port instead, so the engine hardware and its calibration stay stock. That makes it the easiest option to reverse, and the right one only when the engine is mechanically healthy.
Check the engine first
Scan for stored codes before you plug it in. Misfire codes on the deactivation cylinders, an AFM solenoid circuit code, or a lifter noise are signs of an existing problem that should be repaired first. The module is meant for a healthy engine where you simply do not want cylinder deactivation.
What to expect on the road
The difference shows up in light-load driving: steady highway speeds, gentle acceleration and coasting down small grades. Those are the moments when AFM used to drop cylinders. With the module in, engine behavior there should feel the same as under heavier throttle. Full-throttle performance does not change, because AFM was never active at full throttle anyway.
Confirm your engine
- Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2007–2017 GMC Denali XL).
- The quickest checks are the 8th digit of your VIN, which identifies the engine, and the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label (glovebox or trunk on most pre-2018 GM models, QR code on the driver-door pillar label from 2018).
- The engine runs cleanly with no stored misfire or AFM codes.
- If the vehicle has an engine swap, an aftermarket tune or a replacement engine computer, contact support first.
- Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Email support@automotivebypass.com (Mon–Fri, 9–5 PST) with your VIN if you want a fitment check.
Questions & Answers
Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the GMC Denali XL?
Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.
How do I tell which engine my GMC Denali XL has?
Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).
Which GMC Denali XL years and engines does it fit?
The fitment table lists GMC Denali XL 2007–2017 with 6.0L V8, 6.2L V8. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.
Can I go back to factory AFM?
Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.
Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?
Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.
Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?
No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.
Will it add horsepower?
No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.
Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?
Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.
Does it change anything when towing?
Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.
Is a tune or ECU reflash required?
No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.
Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?
No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.
How much fuel does AFM save?
EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.
