GMC Sierra Denali 2010-2017 6.2L V8 AFM/DFM Disabler
Product function
Applications: 2010–2017 GMC Sierra Denali (6.2L V8). All fitment rows are marked 100% fitment match. AFM engine codes that match these years and sizes: L86.
What to expect: It does not add horsepower; AFM is never active at full throttle. Existing lifter, misfire or oil-consumption faults need a mechanical fix. Light-cruise fuel use may rise slightly, since that is where AFM saves fuel (about 5.5–7.5% in EPA-test estimates).
Fitting: It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. No tools and no tune are needed. Unplug it for inspections or diagnostics, then refit it.
Going back to stock: Pull it out of the port and the stock strategy returns.
Engine code: Your engine code is in the VIN (8th character) and on the RPO label. Engines built without AFM (LH9, LY6, L96, L92, L9H) have nothing for it to manage. DFM engines (2019-on L84, L87) are a separate system.
Core function: At steady cruise, AFM drops cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8. The module keeps the engine computer from selecting that mode. You get the same response at light throttle as under load.
Shipping, returns, warranty: Free shipping to the contiguous US, dispatched in 1–2 business days with about 3–4 days in transit. Returns within 45 days with pre-approval (20% restocking fee, buyer pays return postage). Covered by a 3-year limited warranty. Fitment questions go to support@automotivebypass.com (Mon–Fri, 9–5 PST); include the VIN.

Description
A plug-in cylinder-deactivation disabler for the 2010–2017 GMC Sierra Denali. It goes into the OBD-II diagnostic port and keeps the factory Active Fuel Management system from engaging, so the engine runs on every cylinder all the time. Installation is plugging it in. Nothing is spliced, flashed or removed from the engine, and the factory system resumes as soon as the module is unplugged.
Fitment by year and engine
Each row below is listed as a 100% fitment match:
- 2010–2017 GMC Sierra Denali: 6.2L V8
AFM-equipped engine codes that GM used in these years and sizes:
- L86 (6.2L, 2014–2018, VIN 8th digit "J")
In the same trucks and SUVs, GM also built V8s without AFM, for example the 5.3L LH9 (2010–2012 trucks, VIN code P), the 6.0L LY6 and L96 and the 6.2L L9H. Those engines never deactivate cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage on them. Check your code against both lists before you buy.
If your engine code is not in this list, email the VIN to support before ordering so we can confirm the application.
How Active Fuel Management operates
GM's Active Fuel Management turns a V8 into a V4 at light load by deactivating cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4. Solenoids route oil pressure to the lifters on those cylinders, which collapse and stop opening the valves. Fuel to those cylinders is cut at the same time. Press the throttle harder and the system brings all eight back.
GM replaced AFM with Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) on the 5.3L L84 and 6.2L L87 starting with the 2019 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500. The engines covered here use the earlier AFM design.
Keep up with oil changes
Oil level and quality are worth watching on any AFM engine, because the deactivation hardware is hydraulic. Check the dipstick at fuel stops on high-mileage engines, follow GM's specified oil grade, and address oil-pressure warnings immediately. None of that changes with the module installed.
Before installing
Keep the oil at the correct level and grade before and after installation. AFM lifters and their solenoids are oil-pressure operated, so an engine that is low on oil or running the wrong grade should be sorted out first. The module stops the switching, but it is not a substitute for maintenance or for repairing an engine that already has a fault.
What changes when you drive
Expect steadier behavior at part throttle and no change at wide-open throttle. Towing and hill climbing were already mostly done on all cylinders, so the biggest change is during relaxed cruising. Average fuel economy may drop slightly depending on how much of your driving is light-load highway time.
Reasons to keep all cylinders running
Many drivers would rather have predictable response than the small economy gain from running on fewer cylinders, especially when towing, hauling or driving in hills. Keeping AFM off removes the mode changes entirely. It does not add horsepower, and it is not a fix for an engine that already has lifter or oil-consumption problems.
Other ways owners disable AFM
There are three common ways to stop cylinder deactivation on GM engines: a plug-in module like this one, a custom tune that turns AFM off in the engine computer, or a mechanical delete that replaces the AFM lifters and related hardware and then needs a tune to match. The module is the only one of the three that needs no tools and no engine-computer changes, and it is the only one you can undo by unplugging it. It does not replace failed lifters; if hardware is already damaged, the repair comes first.
Living with it
Because it occupies the OBD-II port, unplug the module before connecting a scan tool, an insurance logger or an emissions-test probe, then plug it back in afterwards. Make sure it sits clear of your left knee and the pedals, and that the housing is fully seated in the port.
How to confirm your engine code
- Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2010–2017 GMC Sierra Denali).
- Find your engine code. On GM vehicles before the 2018 model year, the Service Parts Identification label (usually inside the glovebox on these trucks and SUVs) lists the three-character RPO codes, and the engine code starts with L. From 2018, GM moved that data into a QR code on the certification label on the driver-side door pillar. The 8th character of the VIN also identifies the engine.
- No check-engine light is on, and oil level and pressure are normal.
- Engine swaps, custom tunes and replaced ECUs need a fitment check from support before ordering.
- Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Questions & Answers
Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the GMC Sierra Denali?
Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.
Can I go back to factory AFM?
Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.
Which GMC Sierra Denali years and engines does it fit?
The fitment table lists GMC Sierra Denali 2010–2017 with 6.2L V8. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.
Will it add horsepower?
No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.
How do I tell which engine my GMC Sierra Denali has?
Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).
How much fuel does AFM save?
EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.
Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?
Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.
Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?
No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.
Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?
No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.
Does it change anything when towing?
Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.
Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?
Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.
Is a tune or ECU reflash required?
No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.
