Product function

Vehicle fitment: Listed for the 2007–2018 GMC Yukon XL 1500 (5.3L V8, 6.0L V8, 6.2L V8). Each listed year carries a 100% fitment match. AFM engine codes that match these years and sizes: LY5, LC9, LMG, L76, LFA, LZ1, L83, L86.

Installation: Installation is plugging it into the OBD-II diagnostic port. Nothing is cut and the engine software is not rewritten. Unplug it for inspections or diagnostics, then refit it.

If you change your mind: Removing it restores factory cylinder deactivation. No parts were changed, so nothing needs reversing.

Limits: It does not add horsepower; AFM is never active at full throttle. It is not a repair for lifter noise, misfires or oil consumption. Cruise economy can drop a little because AFM's savings come from light-load driving.

Engine code: Check VIN digit 8 or the RPO codes (glovebox sticker before 2018, door-pillar QR code from 2018). If the code is a non-AFM engine like the LH9, L96 or L9H, skip this listing.

The job it does: On these engines AFM idles cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8 during light cruising. Plugged in, it keeps the engine in full-cylinder operation. Mode changes, and the vibration that can come with them, stop.

Shipping, returns, warranty: Free shipping to the contiguous US, dispatched in 1–2 business days with about 3–4 days in transit. Returns within 45 days with pre-approval (20% restocking fee, buyer pays return postage). Covered by a 3-year limited warranty. Not sure? Email support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN, Monday to Friday 9–5 PST.

Description

For the 2007–2018 GMC Yukon XL 1500: an OBD-II plug-in module that stops the engine from switching into cylinder-deactivation mode. The engine stays on all cylinders during cruising and light throttle, where AFM would normally shut half of them down. No tools, no wiring and no reflash of the engine computer. Unplug it and AFM works again as it did from the factory.

Covered applications

Each row below is listed as a 100% fitment match:

  • 2007–2009 GMC Yukon XL 1500: 5.3L V8 / 6.0L V8
  • 2010–2014 GMC Yukon XL 1500: 5.3L V8 / 6.0L V8 / 6.2L V8
  • 2015–2017 GMC Yukon XL 1500: 5.3L V8 / 6.2L V8
  • 2018 GMC Yukon XL 1500: 5.3L V8

GM engine codes with AFM that line up with these years and displacements:

  • LY5 (5.3L, 2007–2009, VIN 8th digit "J")
  • LC9 (5.3L, 2007–2011, VIN 8th digit "3")
  • LMG (5.3L, 2007–2014, VIN 8th digit "0")
  • L76 (6.0L, 2007–2009, VIN 8th digit "Y")
  • LFA (6.0L, 2008–2009, VIN 8th digit "5")
  • LZ1 (6.0L, 2010–2013, VIN 8th digit "J")
  • L83 (5.3L, 2014–2018, VIN 8th digit "C")
  • L86 (6.2L, 2014–2018, VIN 8th digit "J")

In the same trucks and SUVs, GM also built V8s without AFM, for example the 5.3L LH9 (2010–2012 trucks, VIN code P), the 6.0L LY6 and L96 and the 6.2L L9H. Those engines never deactivate cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage on them. Check your code against both lists before you buy.

An engine code that is not listed here does not automatically rule the vehicle out, but send us the VIN first so we can check.

How GM cylinder deactivation works

GM's Active Fuel Management turns a V8 into a V4 at light load by deactivating cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4. Solenoids route oil pressure to the lifters on those cylinders, which collapse and stop opening the valves. Fuel to those cylinders is cut at the same time. Press the throttle harder and the system brings all eight back.

For the 2019 redesign of the Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500, GM introduced Dynamic Fuel Management on the 5.3L L84 and 6.2L L87, which can run on 17 different cylinder patterns. That is a different system from the AFM covered by this listing.

How this differs from an AFM delete kit

A mechanical AFM delete swaps the deactivating lifters (and often the camshaft and lifter oil manifold) for non-AFM parts and requires a tune afterwards. A tune alone can switch AFM off in software. This module works through the OBD-II port instead, so the engine hardware and its calibration stay stock. That makes it the easiest option to reverse, and the right one only when the engine is mechanically healthy.

Keep up with oil changes

AFM lifters and the solenoids that control them run on engine oil pressure. Keeping the oil at the right level, using the grade GM specifies on the oil filler cap or in the owner's manual, and changing it on schedule matters whether or not AFM is active. The module changes when cylinders deactivate; it does not change the oiling system.

What to expect on the road

The difference shows up in light-load driving: steady highway speeds, gentle acceleration and coasting down small grades. Those are the moments when AFM used to drop cylinders. With the module in, engine behavior there should feel the same as under heavier throttle. Full-throttle performance does not change, because AFM was never active at full throttle anyway.

If the engine already has symptoms

Scan for stored codes before you plug it in. Misfire codes on the deactivation cylinders, an AFM solenoid circuit code, or a lifter noise are signs of an existing problem that should be repaired first. The module is meant for a healthy engine where you simply do not want cylinder deactivation.

Practical notes

The module uses the OBD-II port, so it has to come out whenever a technician or an inspection station needs the port. Plugging it back in restores the all-cylinder mode. Route it so the driver cannot kick it loose.

Reasons to keep all cylinders running

The usual complaints are a drone or shudder in reduced-cylinder mode, a slight hesitation when the engine switches back, and a general wish to keep the valvetrain doing the same thing all the time. With the module installed, the engine stays in full-cylinder mode, so those transitions stop. Expect light-load fuel economy to be closer to an engine without AFM.

Fitment check

  • Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2007–2018 GMC Yukon XL 1500).
  • The quickest checks are the 8th digit of your VIN, which identifies the engine, and the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label (glovebox or trunk on most pre-2018 GM models, QR code on the driver-door pillar label from 2018).
  • The engine runs cleanly with no stored misfire or AFM codes.
  • Engine swaps, custom tunes and replaced ECUs need a fitment check from support before ordering.
  • Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Questions & Answers
Can I go back to factory AFM?

Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.

How do I tell which engine my GMC Yukon XL 1500 has?

Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).

Which GMC Yukon XL 1500 years and engines does it fit?

The fitment table lists GMC Yukon XL 1500 2007–2018 with 5.3L V8, 6.0L V8, 6.2L V8. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.

Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the GMC Yukon XL 1500?

Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.

Is a tune or ECU reflash required?

No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.

How much fuel does AFM save?

EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.

Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?

No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.

Will it add horsepower?

No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.

Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?

Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.

Does it change anything when towing?

Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.

Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?

No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.

Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?

Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.
