Pontiac G6 2007-2009 3.9L V6 / 3.6L V6 AFM/DFM Disabler
Product function
Fits: The 2007 Pontiac G6, 2007 Pontiac G6 GTP and 2008–2009 Pontiac G6 GXP (3.6L V6, 3.9L V6). All fitment rows are marked 100% fitment match. Confirm from the RPO label or VIN that your engine is equipped with cylinder deactivation.
What it does: Cylinder deactivation on these engines switches off cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8 when load is light. With the module in place, the engine stays on all cylinders.
Oil and care: The AFM hardware runs on engine oil pressure. Follow GM's oil specification and change schedule. Start with a healthy engine: clear up misfire or lifter codes first.
What to expect: Peak output is unchanged. Existing lifter, misfire or oil-consumption faults need a mechanical fix. Light-cruise fuel use may rise slightly, since that is where AFM saves fuel (about 5.5–7.5% in EPA-test estimates).
Confirm first: Your engine code is in the VIN (8th character) and on the RPO label. If the code is a non-AFM engine like the LH9, L96 or L9H, skip this listing. 2019-on L84 and L87 engines use Dynamic Fuel Management, a different system.
How it connects: Installation is plugging it into the OBD-II diagnostic port. No wiring, splicing or reflash is involved. Take it out when a shop needs the port.
Ordering terms: Free shipping to the contiguous US, dispatched in 1–2 business days with about 3–4 days in transit. Returns within 45 days with pre-approval (20% restocking fee, buyer pays return postage). Covered by a 3-year limited warranty. Not sure? Email support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN, Monday to Friday 9–5 PST.

Description
This AFM/DFM disabler plugs into the OBD-II port of the 2007 Pontiac G6, 2007 Pontiac G6 GTP and 2008–2009 Pontiac G6 GXP. Its job is to keep the engine running on all cylinders instead of dropping into the reduced-cylinder mode that GM's Active Fuel Management uses at light load. It does not rewrite engine software, and removal takes seconds: unplug the module and the vehicle is back to stock behavior.
Vehicles, years and engines
Each row below is listed as a 100% fitment match:
- 2007 Pontiac G6: 3.9L V6
- 2007 Pontiac G6 GTP: 3.6L V6
- 2008–2009 Pontiac G6 GXP: 3.6L V6
GM used several V6 families in these years. Before ordering, confirm from your RPO label or VIN that your engine is the one listed and that it is equipped with cylinder deactivation; if in doubt, send the VIN to support.
What AFM does on these engines
Cylinder deactivation shuts off fuel and valve operation on part of the engine at light load, then brings those cylinders back when you need power. The engine computer decides when to switch based on load, speed and other inputs. This module works through the OBD-II port to keep the computer from choosing the reduced mode.
After installation
The difference shows up in light-load driving: steady highway speeds, gentle acceleration and coasting down small grades. Those are the moments when AFM used to drop cylinders. With the module in, engine behavior there should feel the same as under heavier throttle. Full-throttle performance does not change, because AFM was never active at full throttle anyway.
Other ways owners disable AFM
Owners who want AFM gone for good sometimes go the mechanical route: non-AFM lifters, a matching camshaft and a retune. That is a large job and it is permanent. A tuner can also disable AFM in the engine computer. The plug-in module sits at the other end of the scale: no parts replaced, no software rewritten, and back to factory with one pull. It is meant for engines that run well and simply should not switch modes.
Before installing
This module prevents mode switching. It does not repair anything. If the engine already has a ticking lifter, misfire codes, low oil pressure or high oil consumption, have it diagnosed before relying on the module. Those symptoms need a mechanical repair, and keeping AFM off will not reverse damage that has already happened.
Engine care
Oil level and quality are worth watching on any AFM engine, because the deactivation hardware is hydraulic. Check the dipstick at fuel stops on high-mileage engines, follow GM's specified oil grade, and address oil-pressure warnings immediately. None of that changes with the module installed.
Why people turn AFM off
The usual complaints are a drone or shudder in reduced-cylinder mode, a slight hesitation when the engine switches back, and a general wish to keep the valvetrain doing the same thing all the time. With the module installed, the engine stays in full-cylinder mode, so those transitions stop. Expect light-load fuel economy to be closer to an engine without AFM.
Using it day to day
Because it occupies the OBD-II port, unplug the module before connecting a scan tool, an insurance logger or an emissions-test probe, then plug it back in afterwards. Make sure it sits clear of your left knee and the pedals, and that the housing is fully seated in the port.
Check before ordering
- Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2007 Pontiac G6, 2007 Pontiac G6 GTP and 2008–2009 Pontiac G6 GXP).
- Find your engine code. On GM vehicles before the 2018 model year, the Service Parts Identification label (usually inside the glovebox on these trucks and SUVs) lists the three-character RPO codes, and the engine code starts with L. From 2018, GM moved that data into a QR code on the certification label on the driver-side door pillar. The 8th character of the VIN also identifies the engine.
- The engine runs cleanly with no stored misfire or AFM codes.
- If the vehicle has an engine swap, an aftermarket tune or a replacement engine computer, contact support first.
- Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Questions & Answers
Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?
Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.
Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the Pontiac?
Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.
Which Pontiac years and engines does it fit?
The fitment table lists Pontiac G6 2007; Pontiac G6 GTP 2007; Pontiac G6 GXP 2008–2009 with 3.6L V6, 3.9L V6. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.
How do I tell which engine my Pontiac has?
Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).
Can I go back to factory AFM?
Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.
How much fuel does AFM save?
EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.
Will it add horsepower?
No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.
Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?
No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.
Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?
No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.
Does it change anything when towing?
Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.
Is a tune or ECU reflash required?
No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.
Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?
Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.
