Product function

Fits: Listed for the 2008–2009 Pontiac G8, 2008–2009 Pontiac G8 GT and 2009–2010 Pontiac G8 GXP (3.6L V6, 6.0L V8, 6.2L V8). Each listed year carries a 100% fitment match. AFM engine codes that match these years and sizes: L76.

How it connects: The module goes into the OBD-II port. No wiring, splicing or reflash is involved. Remove it whenever a scan tool or emissions tester needs the port.

What to expect: No power gain: full-throttle operation already uses every cylinder. An engine that already has a valvetrain fault still needs repair. Cruise economy can drop a little because AFM's savings come from light-load driving.

What it does: At steady cruise, AFM drops cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8. With the module in place, the engine stays on all cylinders.

Confirm first: Check VIN digit 8 or the RPO codes (glovebox sticker before 2018, door-pillar QR code from 2018). Engines built without AFM (LH9, LY6, L96, L92, L9H) have nothing for it to manage.

Oil and care: AFM lifters are switched by oil pressure. Follow GM's oil specification and change schedule. Start with a healthy engine: clear up misfire or lifter codes first.

Shipping and warranty: No-cost standard shipping in the contiguous United States (handling 1–2 business days, transit 3–4). Pre-approved returns are accepted for 45 days, with a 20% restocking fee and customer-paid return shipping. The part has a 3-year limited warranty. Not sure? Email support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN, Monday to Friday 9–5 PST.

Description

Fits the 2008–2009 Pontiac G8, 2008–2009 Pontiac G8 GT and 2009–2010 Pontiac G8 GXP. The module connects at the OBD-II port and keeps GM's cylinder deactivation from switching on, which means steady all-cylinder operation instead of repeated changes between full and partial mode. It does not rewrite engine software, and removal takes seconds: unplug the module and the vehicle is back to stock behavior.

Fitment by year and engine

Listed applications, each a 100% fitment match:

  • 2008–2009 Pontiac G8: 3.6L V6
  • 2008–2009 Pontiac G8 GT: 6.0L V8
  • 2009–2010 Pontiac G8 GXP: 6.2L V8

GM engine codes with AFM that line up with these years and displacements:

  • L76 (6.0L, 2008–2009, VIN 8th digit "Y")

An engine code that is not listed here does not automatically rule the vehicle out, but send us the VIN first so we can check.

The factory system in brief

GM's Active Fuel Management turns a V8 into a V4 at light load by deactivating cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4. Solenoids route oil pressure to the lifters on those cylinders, which collapse and stop opening the valves. Fuel to those cylinders is cut at the same time. Press the throttle harder and the system brings all eight back.

Before installing

This module prevents mode switching. It does not repair anything. If the engine already has a ticking lifter, misfire codes, low oil pressure or high oil consumption, have it diagnosed before relying on the module. Those symptoms need a mechanical repair, and keeping AFM off will not reverse damage that has already happened.

Other ways owners disable AFM

A mechanical AFM delete swaps the deactivating lifters (and often the camshaft and lifter oil manifold) for non-AFM parts and requires a tune afterwards. A tune alone can switch AFM off in software. This module works through the OBD-II port instead, so the engine hardware and its calibration stay stock. That makes it the easiest option to reverse, and the right one only when the engine is mechanically healthy.

Reasons to keep all cylinders running

A Pontiac with AFM switches modes many times on a typical drive. Some owners never notice; others feel it every time. If you are in the second group, or you tow and want steady behavior, keeping all cylinders active is the simplest answer. Fuel use at light cruise will usually rise a little, since that is where AFM saves fuel.

The first drive

The difference shows up in light-load driving: steady highway speeds, gentle acceleration and coasting down small grades. Those are the moments when AFM used to drop cylinders. With the module in, engine behavior there should feel the same as under heavier throttle. Full-throttle performance does not change, because AFM was never active at full throttle anyway.

Practical notes

The module uses the OBD-II port, so it has to come out whenever a technician or an inspection station needs the port. Plugging it back in restores the all-cylinder mode. Route it so the driver cannot kick it loose.

Oil and maintenance

Disabling cylinder deactivation does not replace normal maintenance. Use the oil grade and change interval GM lists for your engine, watch the oil level between changes, and repair leaks promptly. The valvetrain on these engines depends on clean oil at proper pressure in every mode.

Confirm your engine

  • Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2008–2009 Pontiac G8, 2008–2009 Pontiac G8 GT and 2009–2010 Pontiac G8 GXP).
  • Find your engine code. On GM vehicles before the 2018 model year, the Service Parts Identification label (usually inside the glovebox on these trucks and SUVs) lists the three-character RPO codes, and the engine code starts with L. From 2018, GM moved that data into a QR code on the certification label on the driver-side door pillar. The 8th character of the VIN also identifies the engine.
  • The engine runs cleanly with no stored misfire or AFM codes.
  • Engine swaps, custom tunes and replaced ECUs need a fitment check from support before ordering.
  • Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Shipping, returns and warranty

We ship free within the contiguous United States (1–2 business days to dispatch, roughly 3–4 business days in transit). If it turns out to be the wrong part, request a return authorization within 45 days; returns carry a 20% restocking fee and return postage is on the buyer. Coverage is a 3-year limited warranty. Questions go to support@automotivebypass.com, weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST.

Questions & Answers
Can I go back to factory AFM?

Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.

Which Pontiac years and engines does it fit?

The fitment table lists Pontiac G8 2008–2009; Pontiac G8 GT 2008–2009; Pontiac G8 GXP 2009–2010 with 3.6L V6, 6.0L V8, 6.2L V8. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.

Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?

No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.

Will it add horsepower?

No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.

Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the Pontiac?

Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.

Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?

Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.

Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?

No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.

How much fuel does AFM save?

EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.

Is a tune or ECU reflash required?

No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.

Does it change anything when towing?

Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.

Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?

Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.

How do I tell which engine my Pontiac has?

Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).
