Product function

Fits: Listed for the 2008–2009 Pontiac Torrent GXP (3.6L V6). Each listed year carries a 100% fitment match. Confirm from the RPO label or VIN that your engine is equipped with cylinder deactivation.

How it connects: Installation is plugging it into the OBD-II diagnostic port. Nothing is cut and the engine software is not rewritten. Unplug it for inspections or diagnostics, then refit it.

What it does not change: Peak output is unchanged. It is not a repair for lifter noise, misfires or oil consumption.

Before you order: Check VIN digit 8 or the RPO codes (glovebox sticker before 2018, door-pillar QR code from 2018). If the code is a non-AFM engine like the LH9, L96 or L9H, skip this listing. 2019-on L84 and L87 engines use Dynamic Fuel Management, a different system.

What it does: At steady cruise, AFM drops cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8. The module keeps the engine computer from selecting that mode.

Oil and care: Cylinder deactivation on these engines is hydraulic. Follow GM's oil specification and change schedule. Scan for codes and fix existing faults before fitting the module.

Shipping and warranty: Ships free within the lower 48 states: 1–2 business days to dispatch, 3–4 more on the road. A 45-day return window applies once a return is approved, less a 20% restocking fee and return shipping. 3-year limited warranty. Fitment questions go to support@automotivebypass.com (Mon–Fri, 9–5 PST); include the VIN.

Description

This AFM/DFM disabler plugs into the OBD-II port of the 2008–2009 Pontiac Torrent GXP. Its job is to keep the engine running on all cylinders instead of dropping into the reduced-cylinder mode that GM's Active Fuel Management uses at light load. There is no tune involved and nothing inside the engine is changed. Pull it out of the port and the factory strategy returns.

Covered applications

Listed applications, each a 100% fitment match:

  • 2008–2009 Pontiac Torrent GXP: 3.6L V6

Confirm that your exact engine is the one in the table and that it uses cylinder deactivation. The RPO label and the VIN engine digit are the reliable ways to check, and support can confirm from a VIN.

What AFM does on these engines

GM's cylinder deactivation saves fuel by running the engine on fewer cylinders during light-load cruising. The switch is controlled by the engine computer. The module talks to the vehicle through the OBD-II port and keeps that reduced-cylinder mode from being selected, so all cylinders stay active.

Why owners disable it

A Pontiac Torrent GXP with AFM switches modes many times on a typical drive. Some owners never notice; others feel it every time. If you are in the second group, or you tow and want steady behavior, keeping all cylinders active is the simplest answer. Fuel use at light cruise will usually rise a little, since that is where AFM saves fuel.

Living with it

Leave it in the port for everyday driving. When the vehicle goes in for service or an emissions check, remove it so the shop has normal access to the diagnostic connector, then reinstall it.

Oil and maintenance

AFM lifters and the solenoids that control them run on engine oil pressure. Keeping the oil at the right level, using the grade GM specifies on the oil filler cap or in the owner's manual, and changing it on schedule matters whether or not AFM is active. The module changes when cylinders deactivate; it does not change the oiling system.

Module, tune or delete kit

Owners who want AFM gone for good sometimes go the mechanical route: non-AFM lifters, a matching camshaft and a retune. That is a large job and it is permanent. A tuner can also disable AFM in the engine computer. The plug-in module sits at the other end of the scale: no parts replaced, no software rewritten, and back to factory with one pull. It is meant for engines that run well and simply should not switch modes.

What to expect on the road

The difference shows up in light-load driving: steady highway speeds, gentle acceleration and coasting down small grades. Those are the moments when AFM used to drop cylinders. With the module in, engine behavior there should feel the same as under heavier throttle. Full-throttle performance does not change, because AFM was never active at full throttle anyway.

If the engine already has symptoms

Keep the oil at the correct level and grade before and after installation. AFM lifters and their solenoids are oil-pressure operated, so an engine that is low on oil or running the wrong grade should be sorted out first. The module stops the switching, but it is not a substitute for maintenance or for repairing an engine that already has a fault.

How to confirm your engine code

  • Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2008–2009 Pontiac Torrent GXP).
  • The quickest checks are the 8th digit of your VIN, which identifies the engine, and the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label (glovebox or trunk on most pre-2018 GM models, QR code on the driver-door pillar label from 2018).
  • The engine runs cleanly with no stored misfire or AFM codes.
  • Engine swaps, custom tunes and replaced ECUs need a fitment check from support before ordering.
  • Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Warranty and returns

Standard shipping inside the lower 48 states costs nothing; allow 1–2 business days of handling plus 3–4 in transit. Returns need approval first and must be requested within 45 days. Approved returns are subject to a 20% restocking fee, with return shipping paid by the customer. A 3-year limited warranty applies. Email support@automotivebypass.com (Mon–Fri, 9–5 PST) with your VIN if you want a fitment check.

Questions & Answers
Will it add horsepower?

No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.

Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?

No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.

Which Pontiac Torrent GXP years and engines does it fit?

The fitment table lists Pontiac Torrent GXP 2008–2009 with 3.6L V6. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.

Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the Pontiac Torrent GXP?

Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.

Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?

No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.

Does it change anything when towing?

Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.

Can I go back to factory AFM?

Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.

How much fuel does AFM save?

EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.

Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?

Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.

Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?

Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.

How do I tell which engine my Pontiac Torrent GXP has?

Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).

Is a tune or ECU reflash required?

No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.
