How factory stop-start works on the Hyundai Tucson

With ISG (Idle Stop & Go) active, the engine shuts off when the vehicle comes to a stop and restarts when you lift off the brake or press the accelerator. The off button is a manual override for that drive only. Turn the ignition off and back on, and the system defaults to on again, so drivers who prefer it off end up pressing the button at the start of every trip.

If stop-start is not engaging

A Hyundai Tucson that rarely auto-stops is often telling you something about the battery. Stop-start vehicles usually run an AGM or EFB battery, and the system is one of the first features to drop out as that battery ages. Cabin temperature requests, engine temperature and brake pressure also factor in. None of these checks are altered by the module.

Where it connects

It connects at the ISG button circuit, between the switch and its factory plug. Work with the ignition off. Seat each connector until its lock engages, then secure the module with the supplied ties or tape so it cannot rattle or touch pedals, steering parts or anything hot. Start the vehicle, press the stop-start button once, then restart to confirm the choice is held.

A note on the battery

The module draws its power from the vehicle and does not change charging behavior. If your Hyundai Tucson sits for long periods, the same rules apply as without it: a maintainer helps, and a battery that tests weak should be replaced with the type specified for stop-start vehicles (usually AGM or EFB).

Why owners turn it off

Some owners only want stop-start off in certain seasons or on certain trips, such as towing a trailer or crawling through summer traffic with the A/C working hard. Because the module remembers whatever you chose last, it works both ways: leave the system off for a week, then switch it back on with the factory button and it stays on.

Then press the factory button once, switch the vehicle off, close the doors, give the electronics time to shut down, and start again.
