Honda Accord 2008-2017 V6 VCM Disabler Harness
Product function
Covered vehicles: Listed for the 2008–2017 Honda Accord. Every row in the fitment table is listed as a 100% fitment match. VCM was fitted to 2008–2017 Accord V6 models with the automatic transmission.
Common reasons: Honda uses Active Control Engine Mounts and Active Noise Control to mask reduced-cylinder mode. Owners of older vehicles often notice VCM more for that reason.
Engine check: Only VCM-equipped 3.5L V6 engines qualify; four-cylinder, hybrid and turbo versions do not use VCM. The 6-speed manual V6 coupe has no VCM. Check the sensor plug against the pictures.
The job it does: Honda's Variable Cylinder Management idles part of the 3.5L V6 at light load. It is enabled only when the engine is warm, judged by the coolant temperature signal. The harness works on that ECT1 signal, so VCM does not engage.
Limits: Full-throttle performance is unchanged. It does not cure oil consumption, plug fouling or misfires that already exist. Light-load fuel economy will usually be a little lower.
Fitting: Sensor-side plug on one end, factory connector on the other. Nothing is cut and the engine computer is not reprogrammed. Choose the resistance (68Ω, 82Ω, 100Ω or 120Ω) given in the instructions for your model.
Ordering terms: Free shipping to the contiguous US, dispatched in 1–2 business days with about 3–4 days in transit. Returns within 45 days with pre-approval (20% restocking fee, buyer pays return postage). Covered by a 3-year limited warranty. Fitment questions go to support@automotivebypass.com (Mon–Fri, 9–5 PST); include the VIN.

Description
This harness keeps the 3.5L V6 in the 2008–2017 Honda Accord running on all six cylinders. It plugs in between the ECT1 coolant temperature sensor and its connector and offers four resistance settings (68Ω, 82Ω, 100Ω and 120Ω) for the ECT1 signal.
It is fully reversible and leaves the engine computer untouched.
Vehicles and years
Each row below is listed as a 100% fitment match for this harness:
- Honda Accord: 2008–2017
On the Accord, VCM came with the V6 and automatic transmission from 2008 through 2017: VCM-2 on 2008–2012 models, VCM-3 (J35Y1) on 2013–2017 models. The 6-speed manual V6 coupe does not have VCM.
If your vehicle's engine or trim is not one of the VCM versions described here, send the VIN to support before ordering.
How the factory system decides
Honda introduced VCM on the 2005 Odyssey. It shuts down the rear bank of the V6 during cruising and deceleration by disabling those valves through the VTEC system and stopping fuel delivery. Later versions added a 4-cylinder mode, and the newest go back to 3 or 6. Each switch is timed by the engine computer using speed, load, gear and temperature inputs.
What the resistance settings do
Because VCM is held off until the engine is warm, the coolant temperature input is the cleanest point to control it without touching software. The harness places a selectable resistor in the ECT1 signal circuit. Higher values shift the reading further. Pick the setting listed for your model in the instructions rather than going straight to the highest value.
After installation
The change is most noticeable at steady cruising speed on a warm engine, where VCM previously cut in. With the harness installed, that mode change should no longer happen. Acceleration and full-throttle behavior are the same as before. If a check-engine light appears, recheck the connections and the resistance setting against the instructions, then contact support with the code.
Common reasons to disable VCM
Owners usually want three things: no shudder at steady cruise, smoother behavior at the moderate, steady speeds where VCM switches most, and fewer worries about oil getting past the rings on the idle bank. The harness gives consistent six-cylinder operation. It does not add power and it is not a repair for an engine that already burns oil or misfires.
VCM generations at a glance
There are three main VCM versions: VCM-1 (3 or 6 cylinders), VCM-2 (3, 4 or 6 cylinders) and VCM-3 (3 or 6 cylinders, on the later direct-injection J35Y engines). The version depends on model year, and the notes above show which applies to each covered generation. Since all of them rely on the engine computer's temperature checks, the ECT1 approach applies across the range.
Connecting the harness
With the engine cold and the ignition off, unplug the factory connector from the ECT1 sensor, plug the harness into the sensor, and plug the factory connector into the harness. Set the resistance selector to the value the instructions list, secure the harness away from the exhaust, belts and fan, and start the engine. The connection is inline, not at the OBD-II port. To remove it, reconnect the factory plug directly to the sensor.
Check the engine first
Scan for codes and fix any existing misfire, oil-consumption or sensor problem first. A harness that changes the ECT1 reading will not cure a failing sensor or a cooling-system fault, and an engine that already fouls plugs on one bank needs inspection. Watch coolant level and the temperature gauge as you would normally.
Before ordering
- Your model and year match a row above (2008–2017 Honda Accord).
- Your vehicle has the V6 with VCM described in the notes above (not a four-cylinder, hybrid or turbo model).
- The connector at your ECT1 sensor matches the product photos.
- Engine swaps, aftermarket ECUs or modified wiring need a fitment check from support first.
- Unsure? Send your VIN to support@automotivebypass.com.
Ordering details
Standard shipping inside the lower 48 states costs nothing; allow 1–2 business days of handling plus 3–4 in transit. Returns need approval first and must be requested within 45 days. Approved returns are subject to a 20% restocking fee, with return shipping paid by the customer. A 3-year limited warranty applies. Email support@automotivebypass.com (Mon–Fri, 9–5 PST) with your VIN if you want a fitment check.
Questions & Answers
Which Honda Accord years are listed?
The fitment table lists Honda Accord 2008–2017. VCM fitment also depends on engine and trim, so check the notes on this page.
What do the 68Ω, 82Ω, 100Ω and 120Ω settings mean?
They are resistance values added to the ECT1 signal, not power levels. Use the setting the instructions give for your vehicle.
Will it fix oil consumption or misfires?
No. Diagnose and repair existing faults first. The harness only prevents VCM from engaging.
Does this VCM harness plug into the OBD-II port on the Honda Accord?
No. It connects inline at the ECT1 coolant temperature sensor connector.
Can I return to factory VCM?
Yes. Unplug the harness and reconnect the factory connector to the sensor.
Which resistance setting should I use?
Start with the setting the instructions list for your model. If a check-engine light appears, unplug the harness, read the code and contact support with the VIN and the code.
Will it add horsepower?
No. It keeps all six cylinders active. Power at full throttle is unchanged because VCM is not active at full throttle.
Does fuel economy change?
Usually a little at light-load cruising, because that is where VCM saved fuel. Acceleration and full-throttle driving always ran on six cylinders.
Does it work on four-cylinder, hybrid or turbo models?
No. Those engines do not use VCM. The harness is for the 3.5L V6 VCM engines described on this page.
Is it the same as an OBD-II VCM device or a tune?
No. OBD-II devices and software tunes work through the engine computer. This harness only changes the ECT1 sensor signal and leaves the software untouched.
