Product function

Fits: Listed for the 2015–2026 Honda Pilot. Every row in the fitment table is listed as a 100% fitment match. VCM on the Pilot: 2WD only for 2006–2008, then all models from 2009.

If you change your mind: Unplug the harness and reconnect the factory plug to restore VCM. Work on the sensor only when the engine has cooled.

Common reasons: VCM vehicles rely on active mounts and cabin noise cancellation to hide the switch. Owners of older vehicles often notice VCM more for that reason.

Fitting: It fits inline between the ECT1 sensor and its factory connector. It does not use the OBD-II port and does not change software. Set it to the value listed for your vehicle among 68Ω, 82Ω, 100Ω and 120Ω.

Limits: There is no power gain, because VCM is never active at full throttle. An engine with current faults still needs diagnosis. Expect slightly higher fuel use at steady cruise.

What it does: At steady cruise, VCM runs the V6 on fewer cylinders. The engine computer only allows this once coolant temperature is in range. This harness shifts the ECT1 reading slightly so VCM stays off and all six cylinders keep running.

Before you order: Confirm a VCM 3.5L V6; other powertrains have no VCM. Compare the ECT1 connector with the product photos.

Shipping, returns, warranty: Ships free within the lower 48 states: 1–2 business days to dispatch, 3–4 more on the road. A 45-day return window applies once a return is approved, less a 20% restocking fee and return shipping. 3-year limited warranty. Not sure? Email support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN, Monday to Friday 9–5 PST.

Description

For the 2015–2026 Honda Pilot: an inline ECT1 harness that stops Variable Cylinder Management from engaging. No OBD-II plug, no software change. It sits between the coolant temperature sensor and the factory connector, with four resistance settings to match the vehicle.

It is fully reversible and leaves the engine computer untouched.

Fitment

Listed applications (100% fitment match):

  • Honda Pilot: 2015–2026

Pilot generations and their VCM: 2009–2015 J35Z4 with VCM-2 (3, 4 or 6 cylinders), 2016–2022 J35Y6 with VCM-3 (3 or 6 cylinders), and 2023-on J35Y8 with a newer 3/6-cylinder VCM.

Engine generations above come from Honda and published engine references; check your VIN against them before ordering.

How Honda VCM works

VCM uses the VTEC rocker-arm system to keep the intake and exhaust valves closed on one bank of cylinders and cuts fuel to them at the same time. Honda chose the rear bank, which is why owners describe the engine as running on three cylinders while cruising. Honda says the system looks at throttle position, vehicle speed, engine speed, gear selection and engine oil temperature before it switches, and brings all six cylinders back as soon as more torque is needed.

How the harness works

The engine computer will not switch to VCM until coolant temperature is in range. The ECT1 sensor reports that temperature as a resistance that drops as the engine heats up. This harness adds resistance in series, so the computer sees a slightly lower temperature than the actual one and keeps the engine in six-cylinder mode. The 68Ω, 82Ω, 100Ω and 120Ω settings are resistance values, not power levels; the supplied guide tells you which one to start with.

Fitting it

With the engine cold and the ignition off, unplug the factory connector from the ECT1 sensor, plug the harness into the sensor, and plug the factory connector into the harness. Set the resistance selector to the value the instructions list, secure the harness away from the exhaust, belts and fan, and start the engine. The connection is inline, not at the OBD-II port. To remove it, reconnect the factory plug directly to the sensor.

After installation

The change is most noticeable at steady cruising speed on a warm engine, where VCM previously cut in. With the harness installed, that mode change should no longer happen. Acceleration and full-throttle behavior are the same as before. If a check-engine light appears, recheck the connections and the resistance setting against the instructions, then contact support with the code.

Why owners turn VCM off

Owners usually want three things: no shudder at steady cruise, smoother behavior at the moderate, steady speeds where VCM switches most, and fewer worries about oil getting past the rings on the idle bank. The harness gives consistent six-cylinder operation. It does not add power and it is not a repair for an engine that already burns oil or misfires.

Three versions of VCM

There are three main VCM versions: VCM-1 (3 or 6 cylinders), VCM-2 (3, 4 or 6 cylinders) and VCM-3 (3 or 6 cylinders, on the later direct-injection J35Y engines). The version depends on model year, and the notes above show which applies to each covered generation. Since all of them rely on the engine computer's temperature checks, the ECT1 approach applies across the range.

Before you install

Scan for codes and fix any existing misfire, oil-consumption or sensor problem first. A harness that changes the ECT1 reading will not cure a failing sensor or a cooling-system fault, and an engine that already fouls plugs on one bank needs inspection. Watch coolant level and the temperature gauge as you would normally.

Check before you order

  • Your model and year match a row above (2015–2026 Honda Pilot).
  • Your vehicle has the V6 with VCM described in the notes above (not a four-cylinder, hybrid or turbo model).
  • The connector at your ECT1 sensor matches the product photos.
  • Engine swaps, aftermarket ECUs or modified wiring need a fitment check from support first.
  • Unsure? Send your VIN to support@automotivebypass.com.

Shipping and support

Shipping is free to the contiguous US. Orders leave in 1–2 business days and usually arrive 3–4 business days later. Returns are accepted within 45 days with pre-approval; a 20% restocking fee applies and the buyer covers return shipping. The part carries a 3-year limited warranty, and support@automotivebypass.com answers Monday to Friday, 9–5 Pacific.

Questions & Answers
Will it fix oil consumption or misfires?

No. Diagnose and repair existing faults first. The harness only prevents VCM from engaging.

Which Honda Pilot years are listed?

The fitment table lists Honda Pilot 2015–2026. VCM fitment also depends on engine and trim, so check the notes on this page.

What do the 68Ω, 82Ω, 100Ω and 120Ω settings mean?

They are resistance values added to the ECT1 signal, not power levels. Use the setting the instructions give for your vehicle.

Does this VCM harness plug into the OBD-II port on the Honda Pilot?

No. It connects inline at the ECT1 coolant temperature sensor connector.

Will it add horsepower?

No. It keeps all six cylinders active. Power at full throttle is unchanged because VCM is not active at full throttle.

Can I return to factory VCM?

Yes. Unplug the harness and reconnect the factory connector to the sensor.

Is it the same as an OBD-II VCM device or a tune?

No. OBD-II devices and software tunes work through the engine computer. This harness only changes the ECT1 sensor signal and leaves the software untouched.

Does it work on four-cylinder, hybrid or turbo models?

No. Those engines do not use VCM. The harness is for the 3.5L V6 VCM engines described on this page.

Which resistance setting should I use?

Start with the setting the instructions list for your model. If a check-engine light appears, unplug the harness, read the code and contact support with the VIN and the code.

Does fuel economy change?

Usually a little at light-load cruising, because that is where VCM saved fuel. Acceleration and full-throttle driving always ran on six cylinders.
