Product function

Vehicle fitment: The 2007–2026 Honda Ridgeline. All fitment rows are marked 100% fitment match. VCM on the Ridgeline begins with the 2017 model year (J35Y6); first-generation 2006–2014 trucks have no VCM.

Fitting: The harness plugs in at the ECT1 coolant temperature sensor. It does not use the OBD-II port and does not change software. Set it to the value listed for your vehicle among 68Ω, 82Ω, 100Ω and 120Ω.

In short: At steady cruise, VCM runs the V6 on fewer cylinders. Coolant temperature is one of the conditions checked before VCM engages. By adding resistance to the ECT1 signal, the harness keeps the engine on six cylinders.

Common reasons: Honda uses Active Control Engine Mounts and Active Noise Control to mask reduced-cylinder mode. Owners of older vehicles often notice VCM more for that reason.

Before you order: Confirm a VCM 3.5L V6; other powertrains have no VCM. For a pre-2017 Ridgeline, email the VIN before ordering. Check the sensor plug against the pictures.

Reversibility: Disconnect it and VCM works as before. Fit and remove it only on a cold engine.

What it does not change: Full-throttle performance is unchanged. Existing oil-consumption or misfire problems need their own repair.

Shipping and warranty: No-cost standard shipping in the contiguous United States (handling 1–2 business days, transit 3–4). Pre-approved returns are accepted for 45 days, with a 20% restocking fee and customer-paid return shipping. The part has a 3-year limited warranty. Send the VIN to support@automotivebypass.com if any row is unclear. Support answers weekdays, 9–5 Pacific.

Description

A plug-in VCM disabler for the 2007–2026 Honda Ridgeline. Instead of using the OBD-II port, this harness works on the ECT1 coolant-temperature signal that the engine computer checks before allowing VCM. It comes with 68Ω, 82Ω, 100Ω and 120Ω settings.

The factory system is not reprogrammed, and the harness comes out by unplugging it.

Covered model years

Listed applications (100% fitment match):

  • Honda Ridgeline: 2007–2026

VCM on the Ridgeline starts with the 2017 model year (J35Y6 engine, VCM-3). First-generation trucks (2006–2014) have a non-VCM J35, so email us the VIN before ordering for one of those years.

Engine generations above come from Honda and published engine references; check your VIN against them before ordering.

What VCM does

At light load, Honda's VCM idles one bank of cylinders. A synchronizing piston inside the rocker assembly disconnects the rocker arms for those cylinders from the cam, so their valves stay shut, and their injectors stop. Depending on generation, the engine runs on 3, 4 or 6 cylinders. The engine computer only allows this when its temperature and load conditions are met.

How the harness works

Because VCM is held off until the engine is warm, the coolant temperature input is the cleanest point to control it without touching software. The harness places a selectable resistor in the ECT1 signal circuit. Higher values shift the reading further. Pick the setting listed for your model in the instructions rather than going straight to the highest value.

What to expect

Drive the vehicle until it is fully warm and cruise at a steady, light throttle, which is where VCM used to engage. The engine should stay on six cylinders, so the vibration or hum that came with three-cylinder mode should not return. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge for the first few drives and confirm no warning lights appear. Expect light-load fuel economy to be a little lower than before.

Why owners turn VCM off

VCM saves fuel, but many drivers prefer consistent behavior, particularly when towing or carrying a full load. The switching can feel like a vibration through the floor or steering wheel, and some engines show oil-related symptoms on the deactivated bank over time. Disabling VCM trades a little light-load economy for predictable engine operation.

Fitting it

The harness has a sensor-side plug and a vehicle-side plug. Fit it with the engine off and cool, confirm both locks click, select the resistance value from the instructions, and route the lead away from heat and moving parts. Removal is the reverse.

Which VCM your engine has

Honda has used several versions of VCM. The first (2005–2007 Odyssey, early Pilot 2WD) switched between 3 and 6 cylinders. VCM-2, used on many 2008–2015 engines, added a 4-cylinder mode that idles one cylinder on each bank. VCM-3, on the direct-injected J35Y engines from around 2013–2014 onward, went back to 3 or 6. The harness works the same way on all of them, since each version waits for the engine to be warm before switching.

Check the engine first

Scan for codes and fix any existing misfire, oil-consumption or sensor problem first. A harness that changes the ECT1 reading will not cure a failing sensor or a cooling-system fault, and an engine that already fouls plugs on one bank needs inspection. Watch coolant level and the temperature gauge as you would normally.

Fitment check

  • Your model and year match a row above (2007–2026 Honda Ridgeline).
  • Your vehicle has the V6 with VCM described in the notes above (not a four-cylinder, hybrid or turbo model).
  • The connector at your ECT1 sensor matches the product photos.
  • Engine swaps, aftermarket ECUs or modified wiring need a fitment check from support first.
  • Unsure? Send your VIN to support@automotivebypass.com.

Questions & Answers
Can I return to factory VCM?

Yes. Unplug the harness and reconnect the factory connector to the sensor.

Which Honda Ridgeline years are listed?

The fitment table lists Honda Ridgeline 2007–2026. VCM fitment also depends on engine and trim, so check the notes on this page.

Does this VCM harness plug into the OBD-II port on the Honda Ridgeline?

No. It connects inline at the ECT1 coolant temperature sensor connector.

What do the 68Ω, 82Ω, 100Ω and 120Ω settings mean?

They are resistance values added to the ECT1 signal, not power levels. Use the setting the instructions give for your vehicle.

Will it fix oil consumption or misfires?

No. Diagnose and repair existing faults first. The harness only prevents VCM from engaging.

Does fuel economy change?

Usually a little at light-load cruising, because that is where VCM saved fuel. Acceleration and full-throttle driving always ran on six cylinders.

Which resistance setting should I use?

Start with the setting the instructions list for your model. If a check-engine light appears, unplug the harness, read the code and contact support with the VIN and the code.

Will it add horsepower?

No. It keeps all six cylinders active. Power at full throttle is unchanged because VCM is not active at full throttle.

Is it the same as an OBD-II VCM device or a tune?

No. OBD-II devices and software tunes work through the engine computer. This harness only changes the ECT1 sensor signal and leaves the software untouched.

Does it work on four-cylinder, hybrid or turbo models?

No. Those engines do not use VCM. The harness is for the 3.5L V6 VCM engines described on this page.
