Product function

Covered vehicles: The 2007–2013 Chevrolet Avalanche (5.3L V8, 6.0L V8, 6.2L V8). Every row in the fitment table is listed as a 100% fitment match. AFM engine codes that match these years and sizes: LY5, LC9, LMG, L76, LFA.

Engine check: Your engine code is in the VIN (8th character) and on the RPO label. Non-AFM engines such as the LH9, LY6, L96, L92 and L9H are not candidates.

What to expect: Peak output is unchanged. Existing lifter, misfire or oil-consumption faults need a mechanical fix. Light-cruise fuel use may rise slightly, since that is where AFM saves fuel (about 5.5–7.5% in EPA-test estimates).

The job it does: Cylinder deactivation on these engines switches off cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8 when load is light. With the module in place, the engine stays on all cylinders. You get the same response at light throttle as under load.

Removal: Pull it out of the port and the stock strategy returns. No parts were changed, so nothing needs reversing.

Connection: Installation is plugging it into the OBD-II diagnostic port. No wiring, splicing or reflash is involved. Take it out when a shop needs the port.

Shipping and warranty: Ships free within the lower 48 states: 1–2 business days to dispatch, 3–4 more on the road. A 45-day return window applies once a return is approved, less a 20% restocking fee and return shipping. 3-year limited warranty. Not sure? Email support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN, Monday to Friday 9–5 PST.

Description

For the 2007–2013 Chevrolet Avalanche: an OBD-II plug-in module that stops the engine from switching into cylinder-deactivation mode. The engine stays on all cylinders during cruising and light throttle, where AFM would normally shut half of them down. It does not rewrite engine software, and removal takes seconds: unplug the module and the vehicle is back to stock behavior.

Covered applications

Each row below is listed as a 100% fitment match:

  • 2007–2009 Chevrolet Avalanche: 5.3L V8 / 6.0L V8
  • 2010–2013 Chevrolet Avalanche: 5.3L V8 / 6.2L V8

GM engine codes with AFM that line up with these years and displacements:

  • LY5 (5.3L, 2007–2009, VIN 8th digit "J")
  • LC9 (5.3L, 2007–2011, VIN 8th digit "3")
  • LMG (5.3L, 2007–2014, VIN 8th digit "0")
  • L76 (6.0L, 2007–2009, VIN 8th digit "Y")
  • LFA (6.0L, 2008–2009, VIN 8th digit "5")

In the same trucks and SUVs, GM also built V8s without AFM, for example the 5.3L LH9 (2010–2012 trucks, VIN code P), the 6.0L LY6 and L96 and the 6.2L L9H. Those engines never deactivate cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage on them. If your RPO list shows one of those codes, contact us before ordering.

An engine code that is not listed here does not automatically rule the vehicle out, but send us the VIN first so we can check.

How GM cylinder deactivation works

When cruising at steady speed, an AFM V8 drops to four cylinders. Cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 have two-stage lifters that the engine computer can switch with oil pressure; once switched, those valves stay shut and the injectors stop firing. The switch back to eight cylinders happens whenever more torque is needed.

Using it day to day

The module uses the OBD-II port, so it has to come out whenever a technician or an inspection station needs the port. Plugging it back in restores the all-cylinder mode. Route it so the driver cannot kick it loose.

Reasons to keep all cylinders running

Owners usually disable AFM for one of three reasons: they notice the change between modes as a vibration or exhaust drone, they want a consistent throttle response while towing or climbing grades, or they want to limit how often the deactivation lifters switch. Keeping the engine on all cylinders addresses all three. The tradeoff is that you give up whatever fuel saving AFM was providing in light cruising.

Check the engine first

Keep the oil at the correct level and grade before and after installation. AFM lifters and their solenoids are oil-pressure operated, so an engine that is low on oil or running the wrong grade should be sorted out first. The module stops the switching, but it is not a substitute for maintenance or for repairing an engine that already has a fault.

What to expect on the road

Expect steadier behavior at part throttle and no change at wide-open throttle. Towing and hill climbing were already mostly done on all cylinders, so the biggest change is during relaxed cruising. Average fuel economy may drop slightly depending on how much of your driving is light-load highway time.

Module, tune or delete kit

There are three common ways to stop cylinder deactivation on GM engines: a plug-in module like this one, a custom tune that turns AFM off in the engine computer, or a mechanical delete that replaces the AFM lifters and related hardware and then needs a tune to match. The module is the only one of the three that needs no tools and no engine-computer changes, and it is the only one you can undo by unplugging it. It does not replace failed lifters; if hardware is already damaged, the repair comes first.

Engine care

Disabling cylinder deactivation does not replace normal maintenance. Use the oil grade and change interval GM lists for your engine, watch the oil level between changes, and repair leaks promptly. The valvetrain on these engines depends on clean oil at proper pressure in every mode.

Fitment check

  • Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2007–2013 Chevrolet Avalanche).
  • The quickest checks are the 8th digit of your VIN, which identifies the engine, and the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label (glovebox or trunk on most pre-2018 GM models, QR code on the driver-door pillar label from 2018).
  • No check-engine light is on, and oil level and pressure are normal.
  • Engine swaps, custom tunes and replaced ECUs need a fitment check from support before ordering.
  • Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Shipping and support

Shipping is free to the contiguous US. Orders leave in 1–2 business days and usually arrive 3–4 business days later. Returns are accepted within 45 days with pre-approval; a 20% restocking fee applies and the buyer covers return shipping. The part carries a 3-year limited warranty, and support@automotivebypass.com answers Monday to Friday, 9–5 Pacific.

Questions & Answers
Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the Chevrolet Avalanche?

Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.

Can I go back to factory AFM?

Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.

Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?

Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.

Which Chevrolet Avalanche years and engines does it fit?

The fitment table lists Chevrolet Avalanche 2007–2013 with 5.3L V8, 6.0L V8, 6.2L V8. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.

Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?

No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.

How much fuel does AFM save?

EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.

Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?

No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.

How do I tell which engine my Chevrolet Avalanche has?

Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).

Does it change anything when towing?

Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.

Will it add horsepower?

No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.

Is a tune or ECU reflash required?

No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.

Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?

Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.
