Chevrolet Caprice PPV 2011-2019 6.0L V8 AFM/DFM Disabler
Product function
Fits: The 2011–2019 Chevrolet Caprice PPV (6.0L V8). Every row in the fitment table is listed as a 100% fitment match. AFM engine codes that match these years and sizes: L77.
What to expect: Peak output is unchanged. It is not a repair for lifter noise, misfires or oil consumption. Expect a small fuel economy change at light cruise, where AFM's 5.5–7.5% estimated benefit comes from.
Connection: Installation is plugging it into the OBD-II diagnostic port. Nothing is cut and the engine software is not rewritten. Remove it whenever a scan tool or emissions tester needs the port.
The job it does: GM's Active Fuel Management shuts down cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8 at light load. Plugged in, it keeps the engine in full-cylinder operation.
Maintenance: AFM lifters are switched by oil pressure. Correct oil grade, level and change intervals still matter.
Engine check: Check VIN digit 8 or the RPO codes (glovebox sticker before 2018, door-pillar QR code from 2018). Non-AFM engines such as the LH9, LY6, L96, L92 and L9H are not candidates. 2019-on L84 and L87 engines use Dynamic Fuel Management, a different system.
Order details: Ships free within the lower 48 states: 1–2 business days to dispatch, 3–4 more on the road. A 45-day return window applies once a return is approved, less a 20% restocking fee and return shipping. 3-year limited warranty. Fitment questions go to support@automotivebypass.com (Mon–Fri, 9–5 PST); include the VIN.

Description
Fits the 2011–2019 Chevrolet Caprice PPV. The module connects at the OBD-II port and keeps GM's cylinder deactivation from switching on, which means steady all-cylinder operation instead of repeated changes between full and partial mode. No tools, no wiring and no reflash of the engine computer. Unplug it and AFM works again as it did from the factory.
What it fits
The fitment table for this part (all rows marked 100% fitment match):
- 2011–2019 Chevrolet Caprice PPV: 6.0L V8
GM engine codes with AFM that line up with these years and displacements:
- L77 (6.0L, 2011–2017, VIN 8th digit "2")
An engine code that is not listed here does not automatically rule the vehicle out, but send us the VIN first so we can check.
What AFM does on these engines
On AFM V8 engines, the computer shuts off fuel and holds the valves closed on cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 when the load is light, so the engine runs as a V4. It does this through special collapsible lifters on those cylinders, fed by oil-pressure solenoids. When you ask for more power, the lifters lock again and all eight cylinders fire. GM describes this behavior in its service bulletin on AFM and DFM operation.
Practical notes
Because it occupies the OBD-II port, unplug the module before connecting a scan tool, an insurance logger or an emissions-test probe, then plug it back in afterwards. Make sure it sits clear of your left knee and the pedals, and that the housing is fully seated in the port.
What to expect on the road
Drive at a steady cruise on a light throttle, where AFM used to switch modes. The engine should now stay on all cylinders, so the subtle shudder, drone or hesitation that came with each change should be gone. If your dash shows instant fuel economy, expect the light-cruise numbers to read a little lower than before, since that is exactly where cylinder deactivation saved fuel.
Why owners disable it
The usual complaints are a drone or shudder in reduced-cylinder mode, a slight hesitation when the engine switches back, and a general wish to keep the valvetrain doing the same thing all the time. With the module installed, the engine stays in full-cylinder mode, so those transitions stop. Expect light-load fuel economy to be closer to an engine without AFM.
Plug-in module vs. a mechanical AFM delete
There are three common ways to stop cylinder deactivation on GM engines: a plug-in module like this one, a custom tune that turns AFM off in the engine computer, or a mechanical delete that replaces the AFM lifters and related hardware and then needs a tune to match. The module is the only one of the three that needs no tools and no engine-computer changes, and it is the only one you can undo by unplugging it. It does not replace failed lifters; if hardware is already damaged, the repair comes first.
Diagnose existing problems first
Scan for stored codes before you plug it in. Misfire codes on the deactivation cylinders, an AFM solenoid circuit code, or a lifter noise are signs of an existing problem that should be repaired first. The module is meant for a healthy engine where you simply do not want cylinder deactivation.
Maintenance still matters
Oil level and quality are worth watching on any AFM engine, because the deactivation hardware is hydraulic. Check the dipstick at fuel stops on high-mileage engines, follow GM's specified oil grade, and address oil-pressure warnings immediately. None of that changes with the module installed.
Fitment check
- Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2011–2019 Chevrolet Caprice PPV).
- Look up the engine RPO code. Older GM vehicles print it on the Service Parts Identification sticker, often in the glovebox; 2018 and newer GM models carry it in a QR code on the driver-side B-pillar label. You can also read the 8th digit of the VIN, which is the engine code.
- No check-engine light is on, and oil level and pressure are normal.
- If the vehicle has an engine swap, an aftermarket tune or a replacement engine computer, contact support first.
- Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.
Warranty and returns
We ship free within the contiguous United States (1–2 business days to dispatch, roughly 3–4 business days in transit). If it turns out to be the wrong part, request a return authorization within 45 days; returns carry a 20% restocking fee and return postage is on the buyer. Coverage is a 3-year limited warranty. Questions go to support@automotivebypass.com, weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST.
Questions & Answers
Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the Chevrolet Caprice PPV?
Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.
Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?
Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.
How do I tell which engine my Chevrolet Caprice PPV has?
Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).
Which Chevrolet Caprice PPV years and engines does it fit?
The fitment table lists Chevrolet Caprice PPV 2011–2019 with 6.0L V8. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.
Can I go back to factory AFM?
Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.
Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?
Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.
Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?
No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.
Is a tune or ECU reflash required?
No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.
Will it add horsepower?
No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.
Does it change anything when towing?
Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.
How much fuel does AFM save?
EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.
Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?
No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.
