Product function

Covered vehicles: The 2008–2009 Chevrolet Equinox Sport (3.6L V6). All fitment rows are marked 100% fitment match. Confirm from the RPO label or VIN that your engine is equipped with cylinder deactivation.

The job it does: On these engines AFM idles cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8 during light cruising. With the module in place, the engine stays on all cylinders. You get the same response at light throttle as under load.

Maintenance: AFM lifters are switched by oil pressure. Follow GM's oil specification and change schedule. Scan for codes and fix existing faults before fitting the module.

Going back to stock: Pull it out of the port and the stock strategy returns. No parts were changed, so nothing needs reversing.

Fitting: It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. No tools and no tune are needed. Take it out when a shop needs the port.

Limits: Peak output is unchanged. Existing lifter, misfire or oil-consumption faults need a mechanical fix.

Engine code: Your engine code is in the VIN (8th character) and on the RPO label. If the code is a non-AFM engine like the LH9, L96 or L9H, skip this listing.

Shipping and warranty: No-cost standard shipping in the contiguous United States (handling 1–2 business days, transit 3–4). Pre-approved returns are accepted for 45 days, with a 20% restocking fee and customer-paid return shipping. The part has a 3-year limited warranty. Fitment questions go to support@automotivebypass.com (Mon–Fri, 9–5 PST); include the VIN.

Description

Fits the 2008–2009 Chevrolet Equinox Sport. The module connects at the OBD-II port and keeps GM's cylinder deactivation from switching on, which means steady all-cylinder operation instead of repeated changes between full and partial mode. It does not rewrite engine software, and removal takes seconds: unplug the module and the vehicle is back to stock behavior.

What it fits

Each row below is listed as a 100% fitment match:

  • 2008–2009 Chevrolet Equinox Sport: 3.6L V6

Confirm that your exact engine is the one in the table and that it uses cylinder deactivation. The RPO label and the VIN engine digit are the reliable ways to check, and support can confirm from a VIN.

What AFM does on these engines

Cylinder deactivation shuts off fuel and valve operation on part of the engine at light load, then brings those cylinders back when you need power. The engine computer decides when to switch based on load, speed and other inputs. This module works through the OBD-II port to keep the computer from choosing the reduced mode.

Using it day to day

The module uses the OBD-II port, so it has to come out whenever a technician or an inspection station needs the port. Plugging it back in restores the all-cylinder mode. Route it so the driver cannot kick it loose.

Before installing

Keep the oil at the correct level and grade before and after installation. AFM lifters and their solenoids are oil-pressure operated, so an engine that is low on oil or running the wrong grade should be sorted out first. The module stops the switching, but it is not a substitute for maintenance or for repairing an engine that already has a fault.

Keep up with oil changes

AFM lifters and the solenoids that control them run on engine oil pressure. Keeping the oil at the right level, using the grade GM specifies on the oil filler cap or in the owner's manual, and changing it on schedule matters whether or not AFM is active. The module changes when cylinders deactivate; it does not change the oiling system.

What owners are after

A Chevrolet Equinox Sport with AFM switches modes many times on a typical drive. Some owners never notice; others feel it every time. If you are in the second group, or you tow and want steady behavior, keeping all cylinders active is the simplest answer. Fuel use at light cruise will usually rise a little, since that is where AFM saves fuel.

Module, tune or delete kit

There are three common ways to stop cylinder deactivation on GM engines: a plug-in module like this one, a custom tune that turns AFM off in the engine computer, or a mechanical delete that replaces the AFM lifters and related hardware and then needs a tune to match. The module is the only one of the three that needs no tools and no engine-computer changes, and it is the only one you can undo by unplugging it. It does not replace failed lifters; if hardware is already damaged, the repair comes first.

After installation

Expect steadier behavior at part throttle and no change at wide-open throttle. Towing and hill climbing were already mostly done on all cylinders, so the biggest change is during relaxed cruising. Average fuel economy may drop slightly depending on how much of your driving is light-load highway time.

Fitment check

  • Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2008–2009 Chevrolet Equinox Sport).
  • The quickest checks are the 8th digit of your VIN, which identifies the engine, and the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label (glovebox or trunk on most pre-2018 GM models, QR code on the driver-door pillar label from 2018).
  • No check-engine light is on, and oil level and pressure are normal.
  • If the vehicle has an engine swap, an aftermarket tune or a replacement engine computer, contact support first.
  • Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Ordering details

Questions & Answers
Will it add horsepower?

No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.

Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the Chevrolet Equinox Sport?

Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.

Which Chevrolet Equinox Sport years and engines does it fit?

The fitment table lists Chevrolet Equinox Sport 2008–2009 with 3.6L V6. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.

Can I go back to factory AFM?

Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.

Does it change anything when towing?

Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.

Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?

No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.

How much fuel does AFM save?

EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.

Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?

Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.

Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?

No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.

How do I tell which engine my Chevrolet Equinox Sport has?

Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).

Is a tune or ECU reflash required?

No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.

Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?

Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.
