Product function

Fits: 2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx and 2007–2012 Chevrolet Malibu (3.6L V6, 3.9L V6). Each listed year carries a 100% fitment match. Confirm from the RPO label or VIN that your engine is equipped with cylinder deactivation.

Core function: On these engines AFM idles cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8 during light cruising. This module stops the switch into reduced-cylinder mode. Mode changes, and the vibration that can come with them, stop.

Installation: Installation is plugging it into the OBD-II diagnostic port. Nothing is cut and the engine software is not rewritten. Take it out when a shop needs the port.

What it does not change: It does not add horsepower; AFM is never active at full throttle. Existing lifter, misfire or oil-consumption faults need a mechanical fix. Expect a small fuel economy change at light cruise, where AFM's 5.5–7.5% estimated benefit comes from.

Before you order: Read the engine code from the 8th VIN digit or the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label. Engines built without AFM (LH9, LY6, L96, L92, L9H) have nothing for it to manage. DFM engines (2019-on L84, L87) are a separate system.

Order details: Free shipping to the contiguous US, dispatched in 1–2 business days with about 3–4 days in transit. Returns within 45 days with pre-approval (20% restocking fee, buyer pays return postage). Covered by a 3-year limited warranty. Send the VIN to support@automotivebypass.com if any row is unclear. Support answers weekdays, 9–5 Pacific.

Description

For the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx and 2007–2012 Chevrolet Malibu: an OBD-II plug-in module that stops the engine from switching into cylinder-deactivation mode. The engine stays on all cylinders during cruising and light throttle, where AFM would normally shut half of them down. No tools, no wiring and no reflash of the engine computer. Unplug it and AFM works again as it did from the factory.

Covered applications

The fitment table for this part (all rows marked 100% fitment match):

  • 2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx: 3.9L V6
  • 2007 Chevrolet Malibu: 3.9L V6
  • 2008–2009 Chevrolet Malibu: 3.6L V6 / 3.9L V6
  • 2010–2012 Chevrolet Malibu: 3.6L V6

GM used several V6 families in these years. Before ordering, confirm from your RPO label or VIN that your engine is the one listed and that it is equipped with cylinder deactivation; if in doubt, send the VIN to support.

How GM cylinder deactivation works

Cylinder deactivation shuts off fuel and valve operation on part of the engine at light load, then brings those cylinders back when you need power. The engine computer decides when to switch based on load, speed and other inputs. This module works through the OBD-II port to keep the computer from choosing the reduced mode.

The first drive

The difference shows up in light-load driving: steady highway speeds, gentle acceleration and coasting down small grades. Those are the moments when AFM used to drop cylinders. With the module in, engine behavior there should feel the same as under heavier throttle. Full-throttle performance does not change, because AFM was never active at full throttle anyway.

Why owners disable it

The usual complaints are a drone or shudder in reduced-cylinder mode, a slight hesitation when the engine switches back, and a general wish to keep the valvetrain doing the same thing all the time. With the module installed, the engine stays in full-cylinder mode, so those transitions stop. Expect light-load fuel economy to be closer to an engine without AFM.

Module, tune or delete kit

A mechanical AFM delete swaps the deactivating lifters (and often the camshaft and lifter oil manifold) for non-AFM parts and requires a tune afterwards. A tune alone can switch AFM off in software. This module works through the OBD-II port instead, so the engine hardware and its calibration stay stock. That makes it the easiest option to reverse, and the right one only when the engine is mechanically healthy.

Using it day to day

Leave it in the port for everyday driving. When the vehicle goes in for service or an emissions check, remove it so the shop has normal access to the diagnostic connector, then reinstall it.

Diagnose existing problems first

Keep the oil at the correct level and grade before and after installation. AFM lifters and their solenoids are oil-pressure operated, so an engine that is low on oil or running the wrong grade should be sorted out first. The module stops the switching, but it is not a substitute for maintenance or for repairing an engine that already has a fault.

Engine care

Disabling cylinder deactivation does not replace normal maintenance. Use the oil grade and change interval GM lists for your engine, watch the oil level between changes, and repair leaks promptly. The valvetrain on these engines depends on clean oil at proper pressure in every mode.

Fitment check

  • Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx and 2007–2012 Chevrolet Malibu).
  • Look up the engine RPO code. Older GM vehicles print it on the Service Parts Identification sticker, often in the glovebox; 2018 and newer GM models carry it in a QR code on the driver-side B-pillar label. You can also read the 8th digit of the VIN, which is the engine code.
  • No check-engine light is on, and oil level and pressure are normal.
  • Engine swaps, custom tunes and replaced ECUs need a fitment check from support before ordering.
  • Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Questions & Answers
Can I go back to factory AFM?

Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.

How do I tell which engine my Chevrolet Malibu Maxx and Chevrolet Malibu has?

Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).

Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the Chevrolet Malibu Maxx and Chevrolet Malibu?

Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.

Which Chevrolet Malibu Maxx and Chevrolet Malibu years and engines does it fit?

The fitment table lists Chevrolet Malibu Maxx 2006; Chevrolet Malibu 2007–2012 with 3.6L V6, 3.9L V6. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.

Will it add horsepower?

No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.

Does it change anything when towing?

Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.

How much fuel does AFM save?

EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.

Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?

No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.

Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?

No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.

Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?

Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.

Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?

Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.

Is a tune or ECU reflash required?

No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.
