Product function

Covered vehicles: The 2006–2008 Chevrolet Monte Carlo (5.3L V8). Each listed year carries a 100% fitment match. AFM engine codes that match these years and sizes: LS4.

Engine care: Cylinder deactivation on these engines is hydraulic. Keep the oil at the right level and use the grade GM specifies.

Engine code: Your engine code is in the VIN (8th character) and on the RPO label. Non-AFM engines such as the LH9, LY6, L96, L92 and L9H are not candidates. DFM engines (2019-on L84, L87) are a separate system.

Fitting: It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. Nothing is cut and the engine software is not rewritten. Unplug it for inspections or diagnostics, then refit it.

What to expect: Peak output is unchanged. It is not a repair for lifter noise, misfires or oil consumption.

Core function: Cylinder deactivation on these engines switches off cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 on the V8 when load is light. This module stops the switch into reduced-cylinder mode. You get the same response at light throttle as under load.

Order details: Free shipping to the contiguous US, dispatched in 1–2 business days with about 3–4 days in transit. Returns within 45 days with pre-approval (20% restocking fee, buyer pays return postage). Covered by a 3-year limited warranty. Send the VIN to support@automotivebypass.com if any row is unclear. Support answers weekdays, 9–5 Pacific.

Description

For the 2006–2008 Chevrolet Monte Carlo: an OBD-II plug-in module that stops the engine from switching into cylinder-deactivation mode. The engine stays on all cylinders during cruising and light throttle, where AFM would normally shut half of them down. There is no tune involved and nothing inside the engine is changed. Pull it out of the port and the factory strategy returns.

Vehicles, years and engines

Listed applications, each a 100% fitment match:

  • 2006–2008 Chevrolet Monte Carlo: 5.3L V8

AFM-equipped engine codes that GM used in these years and sizes:

  • LS4 (5.3L, 2005–2009, VIN 8th digit "C")

If your engine code is not in this list, email the VIN to support before ordering so we can confirm the application.

How GM cylinder deactivation works

When cruising at steady speed, an AFM V8 drops to four cylinders. Cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4 have two-stage lifters that the engine computer can switch with oil pressure; once switched, those valves stay shut and the injectors stop firing. The switch back to eight cylinders happens whenever more torque is needed.

Oil and maintenance

AFM lifters and the solenoids that control them run on engine oil pressure. Keeping the oil at the right level, using the grade GM specifies on the oil filler cap or in the owner's manual, and changing it on schedule matters whether or not AFM is active. The module changes when cylinders deactivate; it does not change the oiling system.

Practical notes

Because it occupies the OBD-II port, unplug the module before connecting a scan tool, an insurance logger or an emissions-test probe, then plug it back in afterwards. Make sure it sits clear of your left knee and the pedals, and that the housing is fully seated in the port.

After installation

The difference shows up in light-load driving: steady highway speeds, gentle acceleration and coasting down small grades. Those are the moments when AFM used to drop cylinders. With the module in, engine behavior there should feel the same as under heavier throttle. Full-throttle performance does not change, because AFM was never active at full throttle anyway.

If the engine already has symptoms

Keep the oil at the correct level and grade before and after installation. AFM lifters and their solenoids are oil-pressure operated, so an engine that is low on oil or running the wrong grade should be sorted out first. The module stops the switching, but it is not a substitute for maintenance or for repairing an engine that already has a fault.

Reasons to keep all cylinders running

The usual complaints are a drone or shudder in reduced-cylinder mode, a slight hesitation when the engine switches back, and a general wish to keep the valvetrain doing the same thing all the time. With the module installed, the engine stays in full-cylinder mode, so those transitions stop. Expect light-load fuel economy to be closer to an engine without AFM.

How this differs from an AFM delete kit

There are three common ways to stop cylinder deactivation on GM engines: a plug-in module like this one, a custom tune that turns AFM off in the engine computer, or a mechanical delete that replaces the AFM lifters and related hardware and then needs a tune to match. The module is the only one of the three that needs no tools and no engine-computer changes, and it is the only one you can undo by unplugging it. It does not replace failed lifters; if hardware is already damaged, the repair comes first.

Fitment check

  • Your model year, model and engine match a row in the table (2006–2008 Chevrolet Monte Carlo).
  • The quickest checks are the 8th digit of your VIN, which identifies the engine, and the RPO list on the Service Parts Identification label (glovebox or trunk on most pre-2018 GM models, QR code on the driver-door pillar label from 2018).
  • The engine runs cleanly with no stored misfire or AFM codes.
  • If the vehicle has an engine swap, an aftermarket tune or a replacement engine computer, contact support first.
  • Questions: support@automotivebypass.com with your VIN.

Warranty and returns

Shipping is free to the contiguous US. Orders leave in 1–2 business days and usually arrive 3–4 business days later. Returns are accepted within 45 days with pre-approval; a 20% restocking fee applies and the buyer covers return shipping. The part carries a 3-year limited warranty, and support@automotivebypass.com answers Monday to Friday, 9–5 Pacific.

Questions & Answers
Which Chevrolet Monte Carlo years and engines does it fit?

The fitment table lists Chevrolet Monte Carlo 2006–2008 with 5.3L V8. Match your exact year and engine to a row before ordering.

Can I go back to factory AFM?

Yes. Unplug the module and the factory cylinder-deactivation strategy works again.

Does it plug into the OBD-II port on the Chevrolet Monte Carlo?

Yes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. There is no wiring or splicing.

Will it add horsepower?

No. It keeps all cylinders active; it does not change the engine tune.

How do I tell which engine my Chevrolet Monte Carlo has?

Check the 8th digit of the VIN or the RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification label (QR code on the door-pillar label on 2018 and newer GM models).

Is a tune or ECU reflash required?

No. The module plugs into the OBD-II port and does not rewrite the engine computer's software.

How much fuel does AFM save?

EPA-test estimates published for GM's system are about 5.5–7.5%, with the benefit coming from light-load cruising. Keeping all cylinders active gives up part of that, depending on how you drive.

Does it work on 2019 and newer trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management?

Only the vehicles and engines in this listing's fitment table are covered. DFM on the 2019-on Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) is a different system, so do not assume coverage outside the table.

Will it fix lifter noise or misfires?

No. Those are mechanical or electrical faults that need their own diagnosis and repair.

Does it change anything when towing?

Under heavy load, such as towing up a grade, AFM already keeps all cylinders running. The difference shows up during lighter cruising between climbs, where the engine no longer drops cylinders.

Do I need it if my engine already has an AFM delete?

No. An engine with the AFM hardware removed and a matching tune no longer deactivates cylinders, so the module has nothing to manage.

Do I need to remove it for an emissions test or scan tool?

Yes. It uses the diagnostic port, so unplug it while the port is needed and plug it back in afterwards.
